Browse Forums Building A New House Re: netadelle's build 2Nov 25, 2009 10:27 am Wow checked your blog out and seem to be moving fast unlike ours . It has been 4 mths and the bricks still aren't finished. Hope it keeps moving along this quickly. Forum thread viewtopic.php?f=31&t=22300 Retaining Wall - Site Scrape - Footings 3Nov 25, 2009 10:49 am One week later on the 8/09/09 they did the site scrape. http://i233.photobucket.com/albums/ee153/netadelle/IMG_9591.jpg I couldn't decide on a retaining wall person, there where so many in the phone book. So instead I rang the Estate developer and asked them who they used to do the retaining walls on the estate and used him. He was the cheapest quote that I got, he also seemed the most knowledgeable about retaining walls. He showed me how to read the site plans and work out how high the retaining wall was going to be etc. I rang our neighbours and posted them flyers outlining what retaining we where going to do, I asked them to choose the sleepers they would like facing there property. I think they where a bit stressed and frazzled and eventually he told me just to use whatever I wanted So I hope they like it The neighbours didn't want me to do the side retaining wall at all. They said to just leave the soil spill out onto there land and we would work out retaining walls after they had finished building. I spoke to the guys doing the slab, and they said that it might affect our house and slab by making cracks etc if they soil was dug out later and a retaining wall put in. So I went ahead and got the front retaining wall put in. The back one we can work out later So my Charcoal retaining wall http://i233.photobucket.com/albums/ee153/netadelle/IMG_9719.jpg Built by "Custom Built Retaining Walls" using Outback Sleepers http://www.outbacksleepers.com.au/ Garage slab was poured 30/09/2009 - September 30. I have two small boys, I don't want them getting a rusty nail in there foot. My Dad attached this great big magnet to a broom handle which made the whole process much easier. We got about two buckets full. I could show you the progress photos, but you can go to my blog for that if you really want The finished product looks way more swish. Well it isn't quit finished, but it still looks pretty swish. The gutters, down pipes and posts will all be black, so it should break the roof up from the bricks, they paint the guttering after they put it up, doesn't make much sense to me, but there you go. So just imagine a black line of guttering breaking the bricks up. But they did nothing today However much to my surprise the electrician has been and done all the wiring! They weren't supposed to be there until Monday! Now I am wondering when the gyprocking will start, we have the data cabling guy coming on Tuesday next week. I have to ring the SS tommorow and find out when the gyprocking is to start. They havn't delivered any sheets yet, so I should have a few days at least. On an even better note, the electrician has put the power point in the closet like we asked, and we only asked yesterday! I am going to take the electrical layout sheet up tommorow and make sure he got them all. Re: netadelle's build 8Nov 26, 2009 8:51 pm Hi Netadelle, You must be so pleased it does look very swish. The black highlights will look really good. Feeling a bit green (with envy) Re: netadelle's build 9Nov 26, 2009 9:13 pm It looks really great Love the colours and the bricks. Re: netadelle's build 10Nov 26, 2009 9:25 pm Im still not totally sold on the roof with the bricks, I am waiting until the guttering gets painted! I figure the roof will fade a bit to... I am however really starting to worry about the whooping great big red door that is going to be the garage!! I think people will be to busy looking at that to notice the bricks! I should take pictures of other houses on the street, they are all cream brick with black roofs! Re: netadelle's build 11Nov 26, 2009 9:47 pm It's always nice to be the house that stands out in the street Blog: http://bluemistkids.blogspot.com "Never be afraid to try something new. Re: netadelle's build - internal insulation 12Dec 02, 2009 10:39 am I went up to the house on Thursday and noticed that all the electrical wiring had been done. I rang the SS and asked when the gyprocking was happening his reply was "They should be there now" *eek* I was at work, and freaking out because we hadn't done the data cabling or put in the extra sound insulation that we wanted. There was no action at the built site as I headed home. So Sunday we got the Jim's Antenna guy out and we cabled the whole house up with data cables. Two points in each room of the house. We have them terminating in the WIR in our room. Hubby says he can buy a switch and we can choose if the points are data points or phone points. Like ⋅ Add a comment ⋅ Pin to Ideaboard ⋅ So rang the SS again, "yep definitely that are starting Wednesday" So that gives me Tuesday, my day off to organise the extra insulation that we want. Monday at work I rang a few places and worked out the cheapest place to buy it. Tuesday I asked my Dad to meet me at the store I had chosen, with his van. There where 21 bags of insulation total. We had to do it in two trips. Halfway back to the house on the 2nd trip my Dad’s van engine blew up! Smoke pouring out everywhere, here we were on Main South Rd, with a van full of insulation! Dad was following me, he pulls out like this chicken wire and says “You can tow me!” WHAT!!! with this little piece of wire!!! Luckily this guy in a courier van saw what was going on and lent us his tow rope. Thank God. Well sort of not really, I only have a little Hyundai – it’s sole purpose in life is to drive me to around the city nothing as insane as towing this massive van. I have to turn the air-con off to go up a hill! Scariest 15 mins of my life towing the van. I totally blew a red light, because I just wasn’t stopping, it took so much effort to get the car moving, the smell! I can only imagine the damage I’ve done to the gear box. My tow bar is now an extra 15cm out from the car. But at least we got the insulation to the new house. I took Dad home, then went home and had dinner. Mum and Dad met us back at the house at 7pm and we worked until it was to dark to see. It was as surprisingly easy as everyone says it is. I bought a cheap knife from Big W, and the batts just ‘sat’ inside the frame we didn’t need to secure it with anything. It was to dark to take photos, I will take some later today. We didn’t quite finish it, I figured I would go up there today and try asking the gyprockers into doing it for me. I get a phone call from my Mum at 7am this morning. “Get dressed and meet us at the house”. So we finished it all off this morning. I’ve just rang the SS and he tells me they have been delayed and won’t be doing it until next week now I just hope all the stuff doesn’t blow out before then As the bricking isn’t finished and one whole wall is exposed. Although I'm sure not so hilarious at the time, I love a bit of chaos The house looks great, it will look fantastic with the black details. Hope your insulation stays dry and ...there. Your Mum and Dad are champs buzz Re: netadelle's build - plastered! 14Dec 03, 2009 8:19 pm The plasterers put up the external wall insulation yesterday, and didn’t do the garage! So now I have to contact the builder to discuss the finer detail of the contract and what they define ‘external’ walls as. I went up to the house early this morning on my way to work, to make sure they didn’t plaster the garage wall. The guy I spoke to said they would be doing it on Monday. The client liaison wasn’t in the office today, so tomorrow I will have to discuss it with her. When I went to the house to see there progress this afternoon I noticed they had done the pantry, but then I was walking around thinking “They haven't done anything, a whole day and they haven't done anything.” Then I looked up. We have a ceiling! So here are some pictures of our wall insulation and some ceilings. Apparantly the garage external wall isn't classed as an external wall! Even though it is attached to the house etc. So no insulation in the garage wall. I sent an email, and rang, nope they say no insulation in the garage wall. So I asked them to define what the 'external' walls where. Apparantly the kitchen wall and the dining/living room wall adjoining the garage is an external wall. You see the walls in the photos above that I put insulation in. Yepp they where going to do it!! don't tell my hubby that or I will be in for it. So I argued that since I had already put the insulation in those two walls could they not do the garage wall? as I had saved them having to use more insulation then they would have to do those two walls. I've just got a phone call to say that they are going to put insulation in the garage wall for me *yay* Re: netadelle's build - gee I Love my SS 16Dec 08, 2009 2:02 pm We got a letter from the builder last week notifying us of there Christmas shutdown from 22nd December to 11 Jan. I just rang our SS to find out if and when things are being done over Christmas. He gave me this run down. We will be locked up on the 14th. Our bath goes in on the 15th Kitchen goes in on the 21st. Tiling and Painting will both be done through the Christmas period. And I can email him any time if I have any concerns End of January is looking do-able! Oh oh and the brickies should be finished this afternoon I am going to pile the boys into the car and go have a look now Here is hoping they are a 'bit slow' getting the bill for the bricking out, so we don't have to pay before Christmas.
