And that INCLUDED the balcony and garage!!! Garage? ....Garage? Luxury!! We had a self-built single carport that we eventually added brick piers and a roller door to the front of, and we thought that was the bee's knees. Our lovely deck saved our sanity, I'm sure. It became an extra room that got used for about 8 months of the year. Thank goodness for a northern orientation! Even though we have a whopper of a house now, with practically enough living rooms for the five of us to have one each, our al fresco room was a must-have. The old covered deck hosted many parties, Christmas dinners, kids' birthdays, bbqs, and got used for a lot of our meals - so we wouldn't have considered any house design that didn't offer a decent-sized covered outdoor area. We're outdoorsy people, do most our living and entertaining outdoors.
