Browse Forums Building A New House 1 Oct 28, 2009 11:02 am My slab has been poured, and the frame was to start on Monday. However, I got a call from the site supervisor today, that the work will not continue only from next Wednesday onwards. Due to Melbourne cup week!! This is very strange, one public holiday and the work has been stopped for 10 days. I can understand the Christmas break but this one seems unfair. Is anyone else experiencing this? Also, is this somethign I should question my administrator asking why no work's being done. I mean Mel Cup is on 3rd November, its not really acceptable to stop the work for 1.5 weeks..isnt it?- Disappointing Building in Tarneit Gardens with Places Homes Re: Construction delays due to MELBOURNE CUP?? 2Oct 28, 2009 11:09 am I think you are over reacting and this is just part and parcel of building and dont agree that it is unfair. A week and a half isnt so bad we waiting 2.5 weeks between slab and the start of frame and were not to fazed at all. Depending on what other jobs the contractors are doing and there availability also. Re: Construction delays due to MELBOURNE CUP?? 3Oct 28, 2009 11:12 am Most Melbourne companies close down the Monday aswell as the Tuesday for Melbourne Cup. My work does, and hubby is a plumber, his work does aswell. You'll find your tradesmen will work some weekends aswell, so you cant have it both ways. If they shut down for a week and a half now, they'll probably do some weekend work later down the track. Dont stress Re: Construction delays due to MELBOURNE CUP?? 4Oct 28, 2009 11:15 am Mirandha, but you are in for a very stressful time if this is freaking you out. We are nearly finished with PD and we basically get one thing done a week. Electrical was done last Thursday... nothing since. But we are still well ahead of our contract date. We have had plentry of gaps of ten or twelve days or so where nothing happens. That's building. I leave you to fend for yourself, figure things out yourself. Terrence Malick Re: Construction delays due to MELBOURNE CUP?? 5Oct 28, 2009 11:32 am Yup. Even over here in WA the "race that stops a nation" really does stop everything!! Although I'm surprised that they stop for over a week? Maybe the tradies have all booked for time off!! viewtopic.php?f=31&t=22766 - my build thread! Time waits for no man. Unless that man is Chuck Norris. Re: Construction delays due to MELBOURNE CUP?? 6Oct 28, 2009 11:43 am We were listening to the radio this morning and they were talking about it. Apparently a lot of tradies have RDO's on Monday and Wednesday!!! So an extra long weekend - Lucky them!!! Re: Construction delays due to MELBOURNE CUP?? 7Oct 28, 2009 1:34 pm Oh okay! I just thought its unfair as the work only started a week earlier, and stopped already for 10 days. As long as they catch up n get the house ready in time, I am happy. They anyways dont work weekends, n now extra extra long weekend for them Thanks guys, your posts made me feel slightly better. I was getting worried after the call from my administrator that at this pace, things will be quite stressful and daunting. Re: Construction delays due to MELBOURNE CUP?? 8Oct 28, 2009 2:07 pm Just to let you know we had the house stnad still for 7 days because the frame went over a day and the gutter guys need a 7 day lead so we had to wait. Happens all the time. We are waiting for a brickie at the moment lucky they are building the inside while they wait but some builders may not do this. Believe me there will be more waiting for sure Forum thread viewtopic.php?f=31&t=22300 Re: Construction delays due to MELBOURNE CUP?? 9Oct 28, 2009 2:15 pm Yeah, I understand this now. Basically I thought that there has to be continouse work without waiting periods. Now I know that it doesnt work that way...silly me..I am buliding for the first time.. penny77 Just to let you know we had the house stnad still for 7 days because the frame went over a day and the gutter guys need a 7 day lead so we had to wait. I guess taking 5 days off (sat through to wed), then working two days before taking another two days off is silly - may as well take off the whole week Blog is now up - http://www.jbdave.blogspot.com/ Re: Construction delays due to MELBOURNE CUP?? 11Oct 28, 2009 5:51 pm I take the entire week off every year. After all, one has to put together the perfect outfit, get hair cut and coloured, a set of acrylic nails, maybe a spray tan, find shoes, handbag and hat to match "the dress".... it's exhausting. And I only go to the Oaks. It would be unfair of me to begrudge it to anyone else. Re: Construction delays due to MELBOURNE CUP?? 12Oct 28, 2009 6:05 pm kek I take the entire week off every year. Re: Construction delays due to MELBOURNE CUP?? 16Oct 29, 2009 10:57 am Tradies can take holidays whenever they like. Have fun building, the further you progress, the longer it seems that no one has worked on your house for weeks. Re: Construction delays due to MELBOURNE CUP?? 17Oct 29, 2009 11:44 am Also it's probably not them just taking time off, they probably have other jobs to do/finish this week and if it wasn't for the cup then they probably wouldn't have started till monday 'A bottle of wine contains more philosophy than all the books in the world.'
