Browse Forums Flooring & Floor Covering 1 Oct 19, 2009 9:16 pm Hi, I was wondering whether anyone knew of which underlay would be better to install considering the majority of mishaps on my carpet would be water, milk and especially but sadly urine? I have been offered an 11mm foam underlay through the builders and the carpet supplier has offered Bridgestone Gold. Any thoughts would be much appreciated. An ounce of PREVENTION is better than a pound of cure! Textiles should not be left with urine in them. If you expect to have urine soaking into the underlay, don't have carpets. There has to be ways of managing things though. Prevention is the key! Ash. Re: Better underlay for children moisture mishaps 4Oct 19, 2009 9:59 pm I totally agree Ash and by all means I'll be trying my hardest to avoid the liquid being there in the first place but in my experience at times like toilet training preventing can be counterproductive. So I'll just have to get in there and soak up and clean any accidents straight away. We are only putting carpet into the bedrooms and one room we call our winter room but I'd still like to know that the products we put down are as good as we can put down given their use. I've been told that the foam underlays have a water proof backing helping me to soak up the problem easier compared to the backing to the Bridgestone. Any truths? Re: Better underlay for children moisture mishaps 5Oct 19, 2009 10:32 pm OK Here's the thing.... to get an underlay wet would require the carpet to be saturated. That shouldn't normally happen. But if it does, you really have a problem, and unless you have the means to flush and extract the liquid from beneath the carpet, you will have bacteria and odours. If there really is a risk of regular 'accidents' there are carpets that are suitable. They are made with an impervious secondary backing, so any liquid is held within the pile, and will not penetrate beneath. They are designed for nursing homes.
