For us tiles though.... we live by the coast, there is always a lot of sand coming into the house, kids with wet sandy feet, spilled drinks etc.... Tiles will be more practical for us (or rather for me!) Tiles can also look very classy, there are some seriously tiles, in some very very nice homes. Re: Tiles or Timber/Laminate in Kitchen/meals/entry areas 7Sep 21, 2009 4:31 pm we have gone with timber laminate. timber was too ex ..and at my current rental we have tiles..which is really really cold in winter.... and I like the look of Laminate... I wanted to have timber floor in kitchen too, but I don't want to risk the problem of having excess water spillages wreck the kitchen area, so I opted to be safe with tiles just in that small area. It's such a personal thing. My neighbours have tiled their entire place (apart from bedrooms) and they are spewing they did it because it is cold, and the tile colour shows up every bit of dirt!! Ahh well, something for you to think about! I ordered my flooring from homeshow (Solomons flooring in Dandenong). They have 12mm thick timber laminate flooring for $35 supply only - well, that's the deal I got! It's worth checking out! Good luck! May be I get a cheaper deal. Re: Tiles or Timber/Laminate in Kitchen/meals/entry areas 11Sep 21, 2009 5:47 pm You are most welcome! If you end up contacting solomons, ask for Harry! He's also done a package for us with carpet, supplied and laid for $25sqm!!! I was wrapped with price! Good luck! Yep....You are right....thats the way it is....Actually this forum is all about my wife as she is not sure....for me....it doesn't matter..... Re: Tiles or Timber/Laminate in Kitchen/meals/entry areas 15Sep 22, 2009 11:35 am I've got tiles in my kitchen/family area and engineered floorboards (the thicker timber laminate) in the entry. I'd go tiles because I find that the floating laminate actually makes noise when you walk on it and is alot harder to keep looking clean. The surface of them shows up everything - even walking on them in bare feet will leave marks. Also if you drop something hard on themm it may not break but it will damage your floorboards (you can't have one and not the other). Another thing to think about is that if you have a big dog their claws will leave damage in the floorboards over time. Eventually you will see thousands of marks caused by them walking on it. I find tiles are more indestructable and require less upkeep than floorboards. I doubt you'd find a flooring provider give a warranty on tiled floors.. Yes scratches on laminate floors can be annoying - but replacing a laminate floor compared to a tiled floor is a piece of cake... I agree we have had laminate in our parents place for the past 5 years and it still looks new.
