Browse Forums Interior Decorating Lounge 1 Aug 27, 2009 4:03 pm Hi! Has anyone used Oikos Paints? The Designer Paint company stocks it - it is an eco and non toxic paint, was wondering if anyone has used it and how you've found it? It's meant to be scrubbable too so durable and washable. Thanks! Peacey Re: Oikos paints - eco friendly, non toxic paints 2Aug 27, 2009 8:07 pm I had a look at using some of these natural paints. I looked at getting a brand called biopaint? or something similiar and it all looked great and even got a good review from choice but it was more expensive as well as having a much lower coverage rate which meant you had to use more per sq m. They didnt have near us and only had limited colours so i didnt try it. Anyway we used the dulux which has fairly low voc compared to years ago, in one room and i bought the wattyl Id enviro low voc which also had the loc voc tint. I definately think it had alot less smell but the wattyl also had a lower coverage rate so really cost more. We used the wattyl in our bedroom beacause we wanted to be in there pretty quick. i'd give one of the natural paints a go but be prepared to use more, so u will need to factor that into the cost. Re: Oikos paints - eco friendly, non toxic paints 3Aug 29, 2009 3:28 pm We used RockCote Ecostyle and were happy with it. The coverage was good, we actually over-calculated and ended up with too much because we were unsure how far it'd go, but it was great. Re: Oikos paints - eco friendly, non toxic paints 4Aug 30, 2009 2:11 pm I just had a look at the Rockcote website, looks good. What was their colour range like or can the paint be tinted to any colour? We still have the loungeroom/ dining and kitchen to go so i might try it out. Re: Oikos paints - eco friendly, non toxic paints 5Aug 30, 2009 6:21 pm Hi Mango, the RockCote can be tinted to any colour by any manufacturer - we had ours matched to a Dulux shade we selected - made life easy! RockCote require the name of the shade you want, and for you to take in the swatch. They'd done our shade plenty of times before apparently, it wasn't a problem at all. We are really happy we went with it. Same price as conventional paint (actually the lady gave us a discount, so it was cheaper than Dulux from Bunnings), good coverage, zero VOCs and the lack of smell was great. From our research the low VOC paints from other brands still contain about 5g VOCs/L, and then more VOCs are added when the paint is tinted. That's enough to still give off a smell, although it's obviously less than conventional paints. The RockCote tint doesn't have VOCs, so getting it colour-matched doesn't add any. When we bought it they also reminded us to stir it thoroughly before pouring it into the tray each time. I did notice that some places that sell RockCote have a bit of a mark-up - if you're near a RockCote shop that's the way to go. I'd buy it again in future without hesitation. I have medical reasons to steer clear of VOCs (yet another reason we decided not to repaint our kitchen laminate in the end!), so that strongly influences my appreciation of the product, just as a disclaimer.
