Browse Forums General Discussion 1 Aug 17, 2009 4:04 pm Hi everyone, One of the main reasons I went with this builder is because they don't charge extra for brick above windows. I'm looking over my plans and all along they have said the following on all the sliding doors "painted timber filler above to match brickwork". Does this mean that instead of brick above the glass doors I will have that wood planking stuff?? All this time I was picturing in my head I'd have brick everywhere. I've also noticed that on all plans up until the last one that was attached in my contract that there was a gap between the top of the window and eaves (where I am thinking brick would be) and now the windows appear to be right up under the eaves (no brick). Is this usual? More 3Dish... If the eaves are sticking out further and sloping downwards they would kind of block the view of some of the bricks/infill above the windows. Clearly I have no real clue. However some of our windows are drawn the same and I'm sure they do have bricks above them still and dont go all the way to the roof height. That doesn't answer the question of what is above the windows though. You really need to ask them directly Re: Question about brick above windows/doors 5Aug 17, 2009 7:20 pm Sliding doors usually have infills above them, as they have to be set at floor level, which makes it unlikely that the tops will line up with a brick course or the eaves. Houses with eaves around our neighbourhood generally have the tops of the windows aligned with the eave linings, so there's no need for bricks or timber/cement sheet infills above them. There might be some exceptions; for example the base of our bathroom window sits flush with the tiled top of the bath surround, so there's no wiggle room with that one. The builder had an aluminium infill powder-coated to match the window frame to fill the gap between the next brick course and the top of the window, and nobody would know the difference. It sounds like your builder has taken the simplest way out with your windows and just raised the height because you have eaves. I'd be checking how far from the floor the windows are now, and that it doesn't affect the look of the room or the practical use of the windows. Beg to differ on this one: we have bricks above our sliding doors as can be seen in photo and have seen this on many houses. http://i272.photobucket.com/albums/jj187/nurselovescoffee/HPIM1230.jpg Houses with eaves around our neighbourhood generally have the tops of the windows aligned with the eave linings, so there's no need for bricks or timber/cement sheet infills above them. Yes, I agree this is the case with 8 ft ceilings, there is no need for bricks or infills above the windows as the windows go right up to the eaves. However with 9ft ceilings there will need to be either brick or infills above windows, unless you have the windows made to higher than standard height. Re: Question about brick above windows/doors 7Aug 18, 2009 6:13 pm Thanks everyone for your replies. I finally got a reply back from my sales guy. He said that the windows will be right up under the eaves (I have higher ceilings now so want to make sure they don't look stupid) and the sliding doors will have brick above them. He said the infill was a piece of wood they put inbetween the door frame and the brick. So I'm glad I'm not having panelling! I've just realised I'm having a pretty small kitchen window which I'm not to happy about. Its not even the same size as the bedrooms. Its measurements are 1027x1450 is this to small for a kitchen?????
