Completed OB project and moved in to our new home with our new baby in May 2009! Re: What bricks did you choose - Show and Tell 34Nov 10, 2007 12:27 am We haven't chosen our bricks yet. I want to go to the "brick shops" to have a look, so we get an idea of colour etc.
Just driving around the estates we see cream, cream, cream, cream, cream, cream, red, red, cream, cream, cream. So you can probably guess that I am soooo over cream at the moment. Problem is most of the bricks I have seen on the web (for WA) are cream, pinkish and red bricks. I want brown darn it, not tan, not cream but brown, preferably dark brown and smooth, not the look like someones dropped it a few times. (I seen a nice mocha or coffee or something on one of the vic ranges). I may try to talk the OH into the zinc or graphite colour. One thing for certain is I am not going cream. I will take red (and be pretty unhappy with it) if the grahite/zinc are to dear..... which I guess they will be. Re: What bricks did you choose - Show and Tell 35Nov 10, 2007 8:02 am sorry gang..been away for a couple of days....
we are very happy with our choice and seeing the comments is very pleasing! beautiful house you sold shanem....our builder (Henley) offer the two mortar colour choices - the standard and the off white that we chose - is that a suitable choice shanem or shoould we ask for a particular mix. What mix was used in the house featured on the catalogue??? Re: What bricks did you choose - Show and Tell 36Nov 10, 2007 9:39 am Be clear on what colour the sand is, not just what colour cement they are using. Re: What bricks did you choose - Show and Tell 37Nov 10, 2007 12:49 pm Hi fojean
Thanks for your interest. To get that colour mortar we used off white sand (Mukadilla sand I think its called), with grey cement and black oxide and of course lime. I can't remember exactly how much oxide we used. We cut about 100mm off the bottom of a plastic Coke bottle and put two scoops of oxide in each mixer load. (Don't expect brickies to have a proper measuring cup !!!) You should be aware that any black coloured mortar will fade fairly quickly despite looking like coal in the mixer. The more you dose it with oxide the longer it will take to fade though. Also the picture was taken a short while after a light shower of rain , which may give the mortar a slightly darker appearance. To reinforce parkers comment, the sand colour is the most important. Even if you used white cement with yellow brickies sand , you will not get off white mortar. There are also several types of white cement available, that can give slightly different results. There is standard brickie's off white cement, then Brighton Light, which is slightly brighter (both are about the same price per bag) and there is Pure White cement which is about double the price. Also remember the type of mortar joint can affect the overall appearance of the brick as well. We used flush joints. The best thing to do is ask the brick manufacturers questions. They are more than happy to help you. Selkirks also have some info in their catalogue. Good luck with your project. Re: What bricks did you choose - Show and Tell 38Nov 10, 2007 2:41 pm Well, I still cannot decide .
I have driven all around Berwick this morning looking at various addresses with Austral's Cantebury, Hawthorn and Latrobe, but still love Daniel Robertson's Hawthorn Black Blend the best. Arrrggghh!! Why does the nicest brick always have to be one of the most expensive! If anyone knows of any addresses with Austral's Hawthorn or Selkirks Tawney Heritage with off white motar, please PM me or post pics! The only Tawney Heritage we have seen has the natural mortar and it just accentuates the 'tan' look, which I would like to stay away from if at all possible! Henley - Wilshire Mk 3 ... I love my house!! It looks a bit rough, especially close up but I think once they have been cleaned and in the context of the whole house, they should look ok. Re: What bricks did you choose - Show and Tell 40Nov 12, 2007 6:34 pm parker Be clear on what colour the sand is, not just what colour cement they are using. I'm still really annoyed about our mortar. We deliberately specified yellow sand be used to give a slightly creamy natural mortar colour. They used red sand, and it is a dark yellow. Builder doesn't give a stuff. Husband doesn't give a stuff. I do!!!! Anyway, back on topic ... some pictures of our Austral Renovation Red bricks. Our delivery did not include enough of the darker bricks, and the brickies seemed to have issues following the mix instructions ... we only have one dark face brick in our entire back wall!! Pressed red seconds may be a better bet if you want it to look like the Renovation Red sample wall. http://i236.photobucket.com/albums/ff151/melbournelyn/bricks1.jpg The worst looking patch of brickwork - smack bang in the front of the house! http://i236.photobucket.com/albums/ff151/melbournelyn/bricks2.jpg Rolled, yellow mortar. http://i236.photobucket.com/albums/ff151/melbournelyn/bricks3.jpg No the fireplace doesn’t work.
