Re: Polytech doors? 4Jul 16, 2009 8:55 am Mango Called polytech and they will supply doors to the public but you have to specify exact measurements and drill all holes. Unfortunately it only comes with a square 1mm edging. Hi Mango, I was looking at a polytec gloss (white) kitchen on Monday...as it happens it was right next to a 2-pac (satin white) kitchen. It very definitely made my mind up that if I cannot afford 2-pac then I will not be going with the polytec gloss as a substitute. I just didn't think it looked all that good (a standard laminate - which they also had - looks a lot better so I will be sticking with that if funds don't stretch to 2-pac). Also, I noted the square edging that you are referring to too....it doesn't look as good as the 2mm ABS by a long stretch. I've heard good things about the product (hence my checking it out) but in the flesh it didn't really appeal to me at all which was both a surprise and a disappointment. Hope everything works out for you in the end! Re: Polytech doors? 5Jul 16, 2009 10:52 pm Yeah my husband and I are trying to save as much money as possible by purchasing flat pack cupboards and installing them ourselves. We have done most of the renovations ourselves and i'm lucky that hubby is very much a handyman. I also love the look of 2 pack but have been put off by the scratching, chipping issue. Neighbours just put in this very glamorus kitchen, 2 pack and it has very noticible chips, care of the kids. The cost is a factor but mainly i want a kitchen that i dont have to be super careful over as i think kitchens, familes and kids all go together so the 2 pack is out. I definately agree though the 2mm edging looks far more finished than the square 1mm stuff. I didnt mind the gloss look of the polytec doors, its just the edging that is making the decision hard for me. Did you find standard laminate that was a gloss or was the finish just a velvet sheen? Anyway i know i will change my mind a thousand more times before we even get past the planning stage. God know what i'll be like when i have to settle on a colour! Re: Polytech doors? 6Jul 16, 2009 11:39 pm Hi Mango, You might want to have a look at this site: http://www.lincolnsentry.com.au/Product.aspx?id=833 (Wilsonart/Parbury) "Lustre" Range. A high sheen melamine surface which is available in 3 different door profiles and 10 yr Warranty We will be using this for our kitchen doors with Essastone "Cacao Umber" for benchtop as per cabinet maker's suggestion. PCI Done Re: Polytech doors? 7Jul 17, 2009 5:40 pm Mango Did you find standard laminate that was a gloss or was the finish just a velvet sheen? There was a gloss made by Duropal I think. Prob with Laminex is they do not have a gloss white in their range from what I can gather which is why cabinet makers etc usually refer you to a product like Polytec's (that's what I keep hearing). I haven't looked in to it too much besides getting a sample - because I ultimately want a new kitchen not a revamped kitchen - but Laminex make a 2-pac door called ColourTech. It runs around $50 per door (the average 40cm x 70cm I think). I got a sample in high gloss but they do satin and matte too IIRC. I have tried to smash to bejeezus out of my sample for some months now using a hammer and all sorts....so far nothing (and I use it as a coaster in my study too ). Haven't been able to scratch or otherwise damage it, not one little bit! ETA: you can order up to 4 (?) samples from their website. They have around 8 different whites http://www.laminex.com.au/ There are a couple of kitchen-ey types guys on here so perhaps they can offer some feedback on the product from a professional POV Re: Polytech doors? 8Jul 17, 2009 10:57 pm Thanks to all for your replies. I'll order some samples and see how they compare. Kelly its so good to hear that your sample of 2 pack is holding up well. The kitchen is just taking forever for me to make a firm decision on. We are about to repaint the outdoor verandah railings and after a trip to bunnings for colour cards we decided on the colour in one afternoon. (A modern looking cool brown not mission brown) Anything to do with the kitchen however and its indecision central. Re: Polytech doors? 9Aug 16, 2010 4:38 pm My kitchen reno was finished 2 days ago, just doors and benchtops. I have 2 pack doors and Polytech blue pearl gloss benchtops. I thought I wanted the textured finish but when I saw the sample it looked "dead" compared to the gloss. Looks fantastic but on looking across the bench with the sun on it today I can see lots of scratches after preparing only one meal! I think we will have to place all dishes etc for cooking on a cloth to safeguard the bench. I really thought it would be more hardy and I have been so careful. Will have to close the blinds! I was referring to the polytec gloss finish bench. I'm even worried about putting my metal biscuit tray on the bench now. I expect to be careful but not overly so. Hi Stuey, think you’ve got a couple of options here you’d just need to decide your preference/which options suits best.
