Browse Forums Paving & Concreting 1 Dec 11, 2005 8:34 am Hi,
I live in an old house where a lot of the paving has been done in brick. Is there something I can use to stop weeds coming up through brick pavers permanently? I have small children so I would like to avoid using chemicals if possble. I have no ideas not sure if it is even possible. Thanks Re: Stop weeds in brick pavers 3Mar 30, 2007 2:00 pm Haven't tried this but when you have boiling water left over tip over the weeds and it strips them of the wax and accordingly they die????
Like I said I haven't tested this but might be worth a try........... Re: Stop weeds in brick pavers 4May 29, 2007 12:36 pm Hi. We use a product called "once a year path weeder" which was applied to our pavers about 8 months ago. So far so good no weeds.I think it is made by yates. hope this helps. Re: Stop weeds in brick pavers 5Oct 23, 2007 10:48 pm You will not find anywhere on the market a product that permaenaently stops weeds.
If it did, well you would end up growing a second head or perhapes an extra arm. Nurseries use some products to keep weeds from pots. One that was around was called "ronstar". It was very nastey and all the ones that do that are short lived and expensive. Cheaper to weed by hand and safer. There are several products thast contain a "pre-emergent" which stops weed seeds from germinating. these seeds can remain domant for years (That's why when you do some digging or put new mulch on and turn over the old mulch weeds come through, they were always there, not in the mulch) Yates do the once a year path weeder with their zero brand of products. These are the best you will get. Water the path or paving first though because these can and have stained paving when applied to a dry surface. these will last between 8-12 months and it can vary depending on the weather for that year. useing a steamer or boiling water is an effective and chemical free means to kill the weeds. they have such thin leaves generally and they get cooked by the boiling water or steam. this method won't keep the weeds away. It just kills them. Salt is an effective way to kill most weeds. however it can have adverse effects in other ways such as leaving unsightly stains or deposites on pavers. particularly concrete. It can also hvae not cool effects on the surrounding plants over time. hope that helps. Re: Stop weeds in brick pavers 6Oct 28, 2007 5:54 pm I might add that there is a Brunnings product that does the same thing for around half the price of the Yates one. Re: Stop weeds in brick pavers 7Oct 30, 2007 9:02 am I will second the boiling water or a pump type steamer. Many local councils are trialling the steamers to lessen their use of pesticides. Good on you for thinking about the health of your family (and the environment!)
Good luck and let us know if you have any luck with the boiling water/steam Building a Jandson Espirit in Pennant Hills "What is the use of a home, if you haven't got a tolerable planet to put it on?"Henry Daniel Thereau Re: Stop weeds in brick pavers 8Nov 19, 2007 11:02 pm you could use your iron pluged into a big extention cord to steam the weeds.
That would give the neighbours something to talk about! They'd be thinking you were some wacko ironing the driveway or path Appreciate that Chippy. I won’t do sand under pavers and will connect all up under pavers, however I was going to do: 1) Roadbase compacted with manual hand tamper 2)… 10 18578 |
