Browse Forums Building A New House 1 Jul 06, 2009 8:08 pm Hi everyone, My partner and I are having trouble on deciding what to do for our front elevation. We are rendering the front of our house and I wanted to have some 'extra' part as a feature so I would be able to paint house one colour, and the feature part another colour as I prefer rendered homes that have used 2 or more colours. We don't like the look the planter boxes and added parts to the sides of houses, so we hoped to do a feature in the middle but it is proving difficult with the layout of our house. Do you think we should go with option one and just keep it plain and simple, and have the double doors as the feature? Or go with option two, and have the portico - however it would obstruct the view of the doors partly. We're also open to any other suggestions for the front elevation if you have ideas! We'll be having double doors too Custom European Cabinets - Melbourne Kitchen Specialist PM for business details as website currently being updated! Our Crazy Owner Builder Journey! Re: Opinions needed! Stuck on this decision. 3Jul 06, 2009 8:13 pm Hi Kara, I personally prefer the version with the Portico. We have chosen two colours for our render (although a small section of the upper level is clad for texture). We have taken the darker colour from the top half of the house and have also chosen to put it inside the Portico as a feature. (mind you the house is not built yet, we are almost ready to begin). This 'balances'the colour and gives interest, in my personal opinion. www.themaxbuild.blogspot.com forum.homeone.com.au/viewtopic.php?f=31&t=20717&start=300 www.leahspaperpassion.blogspot.com Re: Opinions needed! Stuck on this decision. 6Jul 06, 2009 10:56 pm Hi Kara, I like Option 2.... Porticos add depth to your facade and your roof line this gives more proportion to the overall appearance of your home which looks fantastic. The other thing to know is this is considered in some cultures a man with 2 legs, meaning a good balanced home. Ideal when selling. Re: Opinions needed! Stuck on this decision. 7Jul 06, 2009 11:18 pm Not that we have built yet but I love the portico and instead of going with the double front doors couldn't you go with a larger size single door so it will fill the front gap and won't take away anything from the front. Just a suggestion. Good luck with it all. Re: Opinions needed! Stuck on this decision. 8Jul 07, 2009 12:02 am Completely agree with bognoel. Was just about to say the same thing - 'took the words right out of my mouth' - have portico with a larger single door. Wider doors can also be a very attractive feature. Stuck on this decision. 9Jul 07, 2009 12:37 am I agree with bognoel too. Go a wider front door and perhaps put sidelights in on either side? I love porticos, they always give a home a bit of grandeur about them and even more so when they are not set back from the garage/house IMO. Is extending the portico further to the front (and hence making your entry area bigger) an option? Re: Opinions needed! Stuck on this decision. 10Jul 07, 2009 11:04 am Hi everyone, thanks so much for your opinions/advice! We considered having a single door, but we love double doors soooo much so thats what made us so torn on the decision. I just want the best of both worlds don't I! I've just sent this picture to our builder and asked if they can structure the portico this way - so it's wider on the bedroom side and blocking some of the bedroom wall rather than the view of the doors. The other side is wide at the top above the garage roof, but then thinner as is comes down. What do you think of this option? ignore the gables though, we wuld just stick with the roof style we have. Stuck on this decision. 14Jul 07, 2009 12:12 pm Definately the portico elevation. It creates a feature to the facade of the house, and allows you to add another colour/feature material to the elevation if you choose to. I also agree with what bognoel and others have said. A large single door (I love the pivot doors) would also act as a feature and not be partially hidden by the portico. The double doors probably won't look as bad in real life as they do on the plan (with regards to being hidden), but they may look "squashed" in behind the portico. I do agree however with the picture you posted. Placing the portico columns in front of the house wall will give the portico more "pop" Blog is now up - http://www.jbdave.blogspot.com/ Re: Opinions needed! Stuck on this decision. 16Jul 07, 2009 10:15 pm Thanks everyone - I agree a pivot door would look great. I've emailed the builder asking what it would cost etc, and I am currently trying to convince my partner - he likes the look of them but is undecided at the moment. You have all reassured me that the portico is the way to go. We will get the portico moved further to the front, and now will just have to decide on the pivot door or double doors. Stuck on this decision. 17Jul 07, 2009 11:01 pm i like the portico too, however you should think outside the 'square', one other person suggested exactly what i was thinking and make the most of your "grand entry" and bring the front doors further out and extend a porch/portico roof over for protection from the elements when entering your house. Re: Opinions needed! Stuck on this decision. 18Jul 07, 2009 11:18 pm Hi brobri Have been considering that, but the door is currently back quite a bit and very protected from the weather. I know I can bring the doors forward more, but the front entrance is already quite a long hallway (approx 7m) so I'm not sure I want to extend it even further. Will keep thinking bout this one.
