Browse Forums Flooring & Floor Covering 1 Oct 25, 2007 10:35 pm Hello,
I have a couple of good sized carpet off-cuts that I would like to turn into floor rugs to go over parts of our laminate flooring. I would think that after it is cut to size the edges would need to be stitched (don't know the right term). Is that all you would need to do? Has anybody done this? I was also thinking of attaching some carpet underlay under this to soften the rug, is that going to work? One last question, is there a way to stop floor rugs slipping on a laminate floor? Thanks Re: Turning a carpet off-cut into a floor rug 3Oct 25, 2007 10:50 pm You need to ring around to the carpet supply shops.
Where I worked at Carpet Court, my boss used to do the over locking on the rugs and carpets, just what you need. I’ve got a 7mt rug in my office that he over locked for me (After they extracted a large amount of money from me for the carpet I bought!) Some will point you in the right direction, others will do it for you - or send it away & charge you (keeping a margin for their "effort")
I got a 2.5m x 1m strip of burgundy/red carpet carpet done to use at our wedding (matched the VL Group As nicely ) and it was around $60 to have it overlocked around the edge. As far as slipping on laminate floor, we had that issue with our rugs on polished timber, and tiles. I bought sheets of thin neoprene rubber foam & glued it to the underside with 'kwik grip' I got the foam from 'Grippy Rubber Products" (Sydney) on Victoria Rd. I'd say the best guess of location is Rosehill, but they are moving to Silverwater soon) It was around $20 a sheet, pretty thin stuff, they call it 'skins' as it is the outer layers of larger foam blocks that are skived into sheets. The 'skin' is good as it's smooth on one side (easy to spread the glue) and grippy on the other side (which will face down on your floor). What type of carpet do you have? Is it in good shape (not buckled & bent)? There are various types of interface matting to keep the carpet from moving around. Carpet stores or places like Clark Rubber can usually help. Ash. The end result is a rug that doesn't move, its the same height as the floor so you don't trip on it and you don't have floor board wear underneath it Re: Turning a carpet off-cut into a floor rug 8Oct 26, 2007 7:04 pm Very nice Dukekamaya…….. one of my favourite design looks! I will do some calling around now I know it can be done. The carpet is a solution dyed nylon brand new, approx 3.6 x 2.8 metres in a roll.
I plan to get one large rug out of this for the rumpus room, as the kids are complaining that laminate flooring is too hard to play on. Hmm, I might even think about pulling the flooring uo cutting out a square and relaying it... Did you know that you can get rugs made from carpet? So much cheaper than buying a shop rug. So many styles to choose from, but you won't get the highly patterned… 0 6273 Thank you. Do I use timber floorboards for stairs or do people use timber treads? Or is both the same? 6 7272 PM me your email. I have a build excavation calculator you can use based on your plans to double check what your builder is telling you. Cheers Simeon 1 10242 |
