Hoverflies

Hi all,

My house is complete...yeay!!!!!

However I can't go around the side of my house as there are literally millions of hoverflies hovering and darting around. You know..the little black & white striped ones.

Does anyone know why they arehovering around my house? The side of the house is shaded. Is it to hide from the sun? Or could they be attracted by brickwork?

Either way if they don't go, I will have to sell my house.

Thanks for any suggestions.

Well done on the house - can we see pics?

Hoverflies appear in heat in shaded areas and love open flowers like daisies et cetera. They actually control other pests in your garden such as aphids and you may regret getting rid of them. Apparently open vessels of water in the area repels them.

thanks...i'll get some photos up as soon as possible.

as for the flies...there are just too many to put up with....and i'm not exagerating.

if i can't use my garden...i will have to sell.

the funny thing is...i don't see them here in the city.

I think I might need about 20 of them...they really are every where.

Ok..I'll try an paint a picture:

There's about 1 hoverfly per cubed inch of airspace across the whole back and side of my house.

Spray the wall of your house with a repellent, and as Matt has suggested get some zappers….they are great! You will be amazed at how many they will kill.

Spraying will be the deterrent though; you want to move them somewhere else. I’d say they are just getting out of the heat……in a few days time you might find you have none at all.

Its temporary…. But if it gets too much, get a good repellent from a hardware store.

Have you thought of natural remedies, i have heard of a few but not tried them myself, planting fresh herbs like basil and bay trees also geraniums are supposed to be insect repellents.
