You seem to be the window guru here so I thought I would run this query past you to source your opinion on the matter.
We just got the quotes back from our builder for the renos that we want to do to our shack. The builder had suggested expanding the windows on the view side of our place. His idea not ours! Personally i like the suggestion

Although he didn't say any specific size , I am assuming a single pane non opening aluminium framed window, say 2000tall by 1800 wide. Placed approx 300mm above the floor. It is set in a brick wall so the opening needs to widened and a new lintel installed.
The quote to have 3 of these windows installed came in at $44,000.

This is just slightly more than we planned for as you can imagine.
To me this works out almost 15k per window. I understand there would be costs for things like scaffolding etc as it's a first floor level but they are all on the same wall, but I get the feeling the builder is having a lend of us on this one.
I rang a friend last night who works as a scheduler for a high end building company here in Perth and he indicated the actual cost for each window should be about $1000 plus installation, lintels etc should come to no more that $5k per window to total at roughly $15k

Questions:
1. How much would the actual window cost?
Is the scheduler close with his estimation?
Am unsure what thickness glass is needed , what safety rating is needed for the glass. etc
2. What is the difficulty rating of installing a new lintel? Ie the work and procedure involved.
It is a concrete floor ceiling, bedrooms above.
3. Is this builder having a lend of us with his installation costs?
I thought the boomtime was over and this seems to me to still be boomtime prices.
Thanks Ed for letting me pick your brains on this one.
Anyone else please feel free to voice your opinions on this one.
Cheers Roger
