Browse Forums Windows & Doors Re: Front door help! 3Jun 11, 2009 8:19 am I think it could be something to do with where the lock goes into the hole. We just noticed this in our new home on final inspection and all that needed was for the builder to bring the hole part forward a bit which they did before we moved in. Great no more rattles and bangs Dont know if that would work for you but maybe worth a try Know where your going in life............... you may already be there Re: Front door help! 4Jun 11, 2009 10:27 am Ninga My front door keeps banging when closed and windy - how can I stop this??? Re: Front door help! 6Jun 11, 2009 1:18 pm Thanks for the feedback guys! I'll give the weatherseals/foam thingys a try first before I start looking to do anything to the door/lock thing. Do they just stick on with some adhesive or something? If they don't work can I take them off?? Yeah the 'Gong is great. Too bad its windy as anything all year round there... except maybe the middle of summer! Re: Front door help! 8Jun 11, 2009 1:44 pm Hi Ya Ninga, I'm an away worker up in the mining camps and as I'm always moving camp to camp I am forever sealing up my windows and doors to keep the light out during my nightshifts. Why dont they darken the dongers for the nightshift workers. Oops i digress here. There is a sealer that I use to seal off my doors that I get from bunnings. Its made by Raven and is called door and window weather strip. It comes in brown or white. It is a soft ridge of foam that comes in two strips joined side by side that can be easily separated to make one long strip 5m (2.5m x2) long. Easy to cut to length with scissors. It has a sticky backing that that is not so sticky that you can have a second go at lining it up if you are a bit wonky the first time. Stuff to avoid like the plague is a stripping that is very square in shape and is like a thick foam tape. Once it's on it's there to stay to the next millenium. You will never remove it. I made that mistake and was never able to get it off. This stuff is not compressible either so the door will be very very difficult if not impossible to close. The raven stuff was about 5 or 7 dollars at Bunnings. Your door may be a little tight to close for the first few days until the foam strip compresses to the right thickness. You know what I was just thinking back to when I painted the door frames a few weeks ago and had all this foam crap on the inside of the frames. I tried to get it off and the sticky tape came off but left all the foam on there which I had to scrape off. Guess I know now why that was on there... to stop the door from banging in the wind! I guess I also know how crap it is to get off, so I'll definitely avoid that stuff! I'll give the raven seals a try, I might even get down to my local Bunnings tonight hopefully! Thanks for the tip Re: Front door help! 11Jun 11, 2009 7:10 pm Well I got the Raven weathershields from bunnings, the R48 for about $7. Meant for gaps 3 to 5mm. May have gone a little overboard as its now pretty hard to close the door, but I'll give it a few days and see if it gets easier, otherwise I may go back and get the smaller size (gaps 2 - 4mm) which I guess isn't that much smaller. No banging though, so its definitely good stuff, and easy to put on. Thanks for the advice guys, it was very much appreciated! Building Standards; Getting It Right!
