Is it some sort of cover up? I assumed they made a mistake and didn't notice it until finished say 50% of the job. So instead of admitting their mistake -- which means they have to fix it -- they just said it looks better this way... Our supervisor told us that the brick layer would contact us about the mortar joints before they started on the brickwork - this of course never happened.. Apparently he just decided that he would roll/iron the joints instead. We can only visit the site on the weekends so the first time we saw this the bricks were mostly done. I emailed our builder this morning to see what they have to say and received no response. I guess I'll have to call first thing tomorrow! The contract says flush mortar joints, you've told them of the error and the more they proceed, the more they will need to rework. I suspect that they used iron mortar joints since the bricks are not perfectly lined up. If you look at the photo, the bricks are not all flush in the vertical plane. I suspect that in order to get flush mortar joints the bricks must be flush. As I said, this is one time that there is no need to chase the builder.
