Browse Forums Building A New House Re: Mortar Joints 3Oct 14, 2007 10:40 pm parker That's not flush. I think its called rolled. They may have struggled to do the flush on those effectively, and decided to just not give you what you asked for! I would not be wanting them to try and get more mortar to adhere to that lot as it will just fall out. I thought it was called raked ... Not sure though!!! As for the flush finish I think that option is well and truly gone as per parkers advice above. Perhaps a few $$$ might make you happier? Maybe?? Raked is where the mortar is way back from the edge of the brick. bmp - at least they got the colour right (yes, still complaining about our yellow mortar!) Re: Mortar Joints 7Oct 15, 2007 1:40 pm According to "Austral" there are 5 different mortar joint styles(see my blog: http://building-our-first-house.blogspot.com/search/label/Mortar%20Joint%20Styles):

Is it some sort of cover up? I assumed they made a mistake and didn't notice it until finished say 50% of the job. So instead of admitting their mistake -- which means they have to fix it -- they just said it looks better this way... I would get it fixed, since it is what you asked for. If you find it OK, I would go for a hefty discount of at least half the cost of redoing it right. But don't ask the builder how much But in the end, go for quality. As they say, quality is remembered long after the price is forgotten. Our supervisor told us that the brick layer would contact us about the mortar joints before they started on the brickwork - this of course never happened.. Apparently he just decided that he would roll/iron the joints instead. We can only visit the site on the weekends so the first time we saw this the bricks were mostly done. I emailed our builder this morning to see what they have to say and received no response. I guess I'll have to call first thing tomorrow! The contract says flush mortar joints, you've told them of the error and the more they proceed, the more they will need to rework. I suspect that they used iron mortar joints since the bricks are not perfectly lined up. If you look at the photo, the bricks are not all flush in the vertical plane. I suspect that in order to get flush mortar joints the bricks must be flush. As I said, this is one time that there is no need to chase the builder.
