That extra reinforcing will cost $$$ and kitchen changes are always very expensive. Almost all builders will only add an extra 20mm layer to the overhang.
20mm of granite, quartz or whatever from a reputable supplier is plenty strong to hold anything most people will put on their benchtops. Re: Am I being ripped off?? 16Oct 08, 2007 6:38 pm jamiet I think the main reason the benchtops are not 40mm all the way across is because the cupboards underneath would need to be reinforced to carry the extra weight without buckling.. Sorry that just isnt right. I put alot of kitchens in with solid 30 and 40mm granite and marble(not doubled up) The cabinets dont need to be reinforced at all if you build them properly in the first place. The reason most 40mm tops are double up is to save on materials and cost. Most man made stones are only available in 20mm so they have to be doubled up. The way it has been done is correct, but they way it was worded in the contract was wrong. Id redo it, but thats just me The price for the bench tops is on the money. They will never redo it and they will just say that its and industry standard. I agree that they stuffed up in the contract and I bet they change there wording in the future, but I dont think you will have any luck getting a discount or getting them to redo it. Re: Am I being ripped off?? 20Oct 09, 2007 7:30 pm So there you have it. If the builder wants to deviate from the contract that's OK. If the customer wants to deviate from the contract, not allowed.
