Originally I wanted timber bi-folds as I will also be having timber floorboards. But the price comparison was quite huge between timber and alum. Also, we were told that timber bi-fold are quite heavy, and more prone to saging down the track. I guess with any type of timber product, there will be more maintenance like repainting, chips/splinters etc. Alum wont need any maintenance. At the end of the day, I think that if you really like the look of timber, and you can afford to get it, go for it! I know a timber door supplier who is happy to adjust his door twice a year or it will jam. So if you really like timber, buy the set of tools also. I will be having timber floorboards, but I would prefer to have a better door than something that may match. To be fair, there is no "better door". On the one hand you have aluminium which is fairly robust and stable, but is poor energy efficiency wise. On the other hand timber is energy efficient but requires high maintenance. There is also a PVC bifold door - which IMO is the best. It has all the good features of both (and you can have it in timber finish). Cheers L Re: Cost of Aluminum Bifolds 13Apr 10, 2009 4:32 pm Not trying to hijack the thread.. but we have two spots where we want bifold doors.. they meet at 90deg angle.. (Sorry dont have a pic to attach) but the dimensions of the two walls are 5.1m and 4.8m.. like this (ignore the dots at the start of each line): . | . | . | 4.8m . | . | .---------------------* 5.1m Is it possible to have timber bifolds meet at the * and open outwards from there to the far walls (or within like 30cm of it). How many leaf's would that be, and what $$ would be reasonable? Can they be double glazed as this would be a heck of a lot of glass otherwise.. -------------------------------------------------------- Building in Highlands Craigieburn Status: Building the Laundryless 25.5: Slab Complete Re: Cost of Aluminum Bifolds 14Apr 10, 2009 4:43 pm Hi - our bifolds are aluminium, but we have done what I think you are asking with a corner unit. I am pretty sure I have similar in timber in display homes. Like ⋅ Add a comment ⋅ Pin to Ideaboard ⋅ Ours are three leaves (2290mm total) by five leaves (4435mm). Cost to upgrade was $8800 and then was also double glazed on top of that. The unit meets in the corner and when open there is no corner pole. Hope this helps a little.
