My questions are : - Did you buy your light fittings all from the same place or from different outlets? - Did you get a discount? - Did the purchase place install them or did you have to get your own electrician? - Anyone purchase the lot from an online store? Thanks guys ! Thanks guys ! We were very lucky Southies, we had purchased all our light fittings from the builder's supplier, after they went bust, the lighting place rang and said they would still supply us at the same price....this was great news. So I did choose a couple of vewy special pendants from elsewhere but all downlights, fans, exhaust dunny fans from the same place. Our electrician is installing them btw. Re: Whole House Lighting Purchases 3Mar 29, 2009 7:24 pm Southies, we got all our lights from the same shop, and they gave me some good deals as a result. My dad is an electrician so we didn't have to worry about the installation. I would have thought I'd have to find my own though rather than the shop do it, but not sure. I like to look at online shops for inspiration, and if I'd found the ones I liked there I would've jsut taken in a printout and asked them to match or beat the price. But I found that I prefer to see the lights in person before I buy anyway. Re: Whole House Lighting Purchases 4Mar 29, 2009 7:44 pm Hi there We are supplying all of the light fittings (incl downlights) to our builder and the electrician engaged by the builder will install them. We simply have to turn up with them, marked for each room. I have been shopping around, and bought the majority of the lights from the one place (where we got a decent discount - 30% off final price). I have also been shopping at some more upmarket stores for the more fancy pendant lights we are putting in, and also looking online for kids lights. Hope that helps. Re: Whole House Lighting Purchases 5Mar 29, 2009 7:51 pm I bought all our lights from one shop, and they did a really good price deal. They ended up even cheaper than online stores (quite a bit cheaper). Never hurts to ask for a deal if you're buying a lot. Judie Re: Whole House Lighting Purchases 6Mar 29, 2009 8:02 pm do you think our builder will be kind enough to install them Re: Whole House Lighting Purchases 7Mar 29, 2009 8:10 pm Oh yeah, that reminds me. There was a $25 per light installation cost by the builder's electrician. These finer details seem to escaped my mind - all part of the bottomless pit of debt this house represents! Re: Whole House Lighting Purchases 8Mar 29, 2009 8:17 pm Hi Southies! We bought all of our lights from the one shop. Downlights, fan/lights, pendants and exteriors. The shop is called "lightstyle" and is in the hudson centre at Castle Hill. We were helped out by Irene (i thnk) and were given a very good price for everything. The best part of it was that they guy who works there on the weekend is an electrician and is installing our lights very cheaply. Gotta love it. I couldn't fault their service oh and they have some very funky lights! (electrician cost for eg is $15 per d/light) Re: Whole House Lighting Purchases 9Mar 29, 2009 8:32 pm wow. this has been on my mind today. DH would like to buy ones that are diy batten type fix lights in a sort of oyster style I think where as I'd prefer more flush to the ceiling. of course the ones i prefer mean a sparkie has to install. I think we'll have to live with bare globes for a while and then decide. I can imagine a mix and since we will need to get a sparky out to add nice garage wall lights then that will be the time to do any other electrical light fittings. If you got 30% discount for buying all together it sounds like it might be worthwhile us waiting and doing the same. Re: Whole House Lighting Purchases 10Mar 29, 2009 8:48 pm We chose lights a diverse set of light from a number of manufacturers totalling around 4K. Most retailers don't stock them all. We got 90% of our lights from one place and the rest from another. We almost went with an online company. Our local retailer ended up matching but not beating the price. In the end we though we might as well support local business and I guess you can form a relationship with them. However, when we went back to get another fan light they didn't offer us the same price (even though they promised to over the phone). They mumbled something about it being impossible to price match five months and some 'mistake' with the original quote. So my feeling is a bit mixed particularly about the whole experience. I suspect you can't beat online prices by much though. I am sure it costs a fortune in energy bills to run a lighting outlet. We got our builder to use his 2nd fix electrician to install but that was more for convenience sake. It probably would be cheaper to use your own contractors.
