can someone please explain to me what the hell is it I am looking at.
The pipe no.2 feeds the tank from the above roof.
The unmarked pipe is the overflow / drain to SW connection.
what are pipes no. 1 and 3 doing?
The pipe no. 3 is connected to SW and no water ever discharged.

You have a downpipe just around the corner that is fitted with a cap (flush outlet) close to the ground. This downpipe should have being plumbed directly to the tank's meshed inlet basket at the top of the tank. Does this pipe discharge water to the meshed basket inlet? To plumb a downpipe to an extremely short sub surface sump where it will build up a concentrated stockpile of sediments and organic matter is beyond stupidity. Pipe 3 This connects to stormwater??? The downpipe around the corner then goes underground to one would assume the vertical riser but maybe it connects to the storm water and the vertical riser connects to nothing. I would need to see a video when it is raining. If you were in Vic, I would offer to come out and have a look because something appears to be weird. It appears that whoever plumbed it has had a couple of changes of mind or maybe he is just forgetful. That is about as kind as I can be! Does the submersible pump draw water from the bottom area of the casing? If so, is it located on a raised perforated platform? As mentioned I haven't seen any rain water discharge from pipes 1& 3. It has been raining heavily in Sydney and once the tank is empty I have to remove the strainer basket to have a look at the pump installation. Interesting they havent install the de-sluding valve either. Can a plumber put a tap on a rain water tank which is full? Tank is similar to one in photo.
