Blackbutt flooring with Vic Ash stairs?

Hi all,

After many months of preplanning we finally have our colour selection next week. We are stuck on the stair colour, we are going for Vic Ash stairs as the builder can't do Blackbutt (I know!).

The main issue is we don't know what stain to go for, Japan black or clear?

Any help, advise or thoughts would be great.
