You are correct, the PVC joining strip often isn't in a trimmer. Look for nails Or because the eaves are so small the nails might be behind the Scotia so you may have to tap along the underside of the eaves until you feel the solid area which will have a trimmer behind. I did use the wallmate in the portico where we have ceiling gyprock in there. Both were easy to do (10 mins max per camera) and seem very secure.
