Hi all
We are looking at having shutters installed throughout our house.
What are the pro's and cons of timber and aluminium? I am guessing that aluminium shutters are a cheaper option?

We shopped around quite a bit and looked at a range of different suppliers. We ended up going for Timber in the end ... just didnt seem right putting plastic on an old house. But a word of caution that there are differences... Ask where they are made - one of the companies who quoted for us (one of the largest manufacturers suppliers / market leader in fact) had their timber plantation shutters made in Asia. I couldnt believe it ... the sales rep measures up, sends the order to asia, they make it there, then fly your custom order back to Australia - and it was all cheaper than the local made option. Also, they wanted to supply the ones that have the vertical rod down the middle - apparently they are crap. In the end, we werent comfortable with a custom piece being made o/s .. what if it didnt fit, and then you need to get it altered here, they may not have the capability to do a good job. Anyway, we decided on the local Aussie made version (about $200 more expensive per unit), and are very happy with it .... Quote: Made from polymer, Thermalite is a solid, non-toxic, synthetic material. Because Thermalite is 100 per cent synthetic, no natural resources are destroyed in the manufacturing process. Additionally, Thermalite is water resistant, fire retardant and provides over twice the insulation of wood and 1,500 times that of aluminium shutters, thus making it ideal for both internal and external applications such as bathroom, kitchens and balconies. Thermalite Shutters have the longest and most comprehensive warranty in the industry; this includes a 25 year guarantee on workmanship and labour and 10 years on the painted finish. yep that sounds like what ours might be. wish they'd hurry up and get here!!!! Paulownia timber - Aussie grown, made in Vic and nice straight durable timber. http://www.portphillip.com.au/ Re: 14Mar 26, 2009 8:23 pm donuts wonderland Donuts, could it be pvc? I've heard that pvc planation shutters look quite authenic but doesnt cost as much as timber. Can you let me know where you are getting them from? I think I've seen alum ones and they looked ok. But i think the blades looked more thin? hmmm, they could be pvc I guess but I would have thought that I'd remember being told that if that's what it was. I'm thinking it's some sort of wood composite maybe. I'm getting mine from http://www.righttrack.com.au (not online though, that's just their website). I'll ask next time I'm talking to them. The thinness ... could that be due to whether the blades are straight or elliptical, rather than what they're made of? You can only have a choice of white colour on pvc one. We've just be that shop today and got a quote. It costs about $1000 for the dimension of 2100mm width x 1200mm height for pvc one. The timber one is about $200 more than pvc one. Metricon Amira Re: Timber or aluminium plantation shutters? 15Mar 28, 2017 7:50 pm It’s right that the choice between aluminum and timber is largely one of aesthetic preference. And a quality supplier is of high importance. There are various pros and cons to both timber and aluminum. However, I personally prefer timber over aluminum as it is aesthetically better. Look at some pictures of expensive homes and mansions, and you’ll see that most homes and mansions make use of natural timber frames on the doors and windows. It’s true that timber costs a lot for some, but it’s worth the cost because of timber’s: longevity, aesthetic design, and added value. Re: Timber or aluminium plantation shutters? 16Apr 15, 2017 11:12 pm Best to define what type of shutters you talking about internal or external shutters. if internals I prefer timber or PVC or UNPVC if Extrnal I prefer aluminiu because its durability to the sun Re: Timber or aluminium plantation shutters? 17Sep 16, 2017 10:24 pm Merlin My 10 year old timber shutters, painted to match the window frames have neither warped nor faded. It may also be worth considering the heat transfer properties of aluminium compared to timber. Of course if you want shutters for looks only then heat radiation and transfer wouldn't be an issue. What brand are they? Or where did you buy them from? Are they basswood? I'm thinking of getting timber shutters for our master bedroom. But not sure about putting them on the slim line window in the ensuite (as per photo). I wonder if the steam from the shower could damage them?
