Browse Forums Building Standards; Getting It Right! 1 Dec 05, 2021 9:09 pm Hi, our large (25m x 1-2 m high) retaining wall was found to be defective by the QBCC and our builder has to demolish and reinstall. He said he wants to use the sleepers he is taking out, which are defective. This sounds just crazy and we have said no. But i am sure he just doesn’t want the cost and time to remove them from site or to pay for new ones. Any advice? We have seen ones at manufacturers that dont look anything like the ones the builder has used. These look like home job backyard job. How can I tell? If you thought they were not vibrated then say that in the original post to make it easier for us to help. You would need to cut one in half with a diamond saw to look for reinforcing and compaction. The back looks tough but the front looks ok. You should be able to ask who manufactured them Re: Defective concrete sleepers for retaining wall 6Dec 06, 2021 8:00 pm I can see what Pulse is getting at. Often concrete retaining sleepers look rough on the back. I'd doubt that they are hand made by your builder. It would be very time consuming to make up forms and the faces look like reusable forms have been used. Ask the builder for the invoice for the materials showing the delivery address. What I'm a little confused about is why if the actual sleepers were found to be defective why is the builder trying to reuse them. He should go back to the supplier and have them replaced. Was it definitely the materials that were defective or the installation? He was thinking if they were 75mm consistent with chips only he could re-use them. But it doesn’t matter now anyway as he used the wrong sleepers to start with so he now has to order an entire new batch 3-N12. Re: Defective concrete sleepers for retaining wall 8Dec 06, 2021 8:12 pm Fair enough.
