His tradies, specifically, are responsible if materials have failed due to poor workmanship. But yes, the builders will never agree for that. TS have to do it that way under owner builder license. I have also managed to secure a number of 'after handover' items (the whole kitchen, laundry, doors; cabinetry). I can't swear to it, but I am pretty sure the 'owner supplied - builder to install' items have actually cost me money (I am absolutely sure the bricks have...). The after handover items I think have probably saved me money. I mean, I am installing some very schmick items so they actually cost more than your bog standard build inclusion; but if it were like for like (I got the builder to supply and install these items) without a doubt they would be more expensive.
