Browse Forums Building A New House Re: Please help me improve my kitchen layout/laundry 4Sep 10, 2020 1:03 pm daniel81991 Thanks so much for the response and the effort you put into the design!!! Will it be out of the ordinary to move the fridge a little more in to the WIP so it's not shown? Also gives me the flexibility to get a french fridge. Putting the fridge in the corner gives you more space in the pantry as fridges are usually deeper than shelves. I would look at the space and do what works for you, however, it would probably look better to see the fridge than to see food on the pantry shelves. You could even put a cavity slider between the pantry and the laundry if you wanted to hide the laundry. Re: Please help me improve my kitchen layout/laundry 5Sep 10, 2020 4:12 pm Bear in mind that you can't open a fridge door past 90 degrees if it's in the corner, which may impede vegetable drawers sliding fully out (and removing them for cleaning is really difficult too). Re: Please help me improve my kitchen layout/laundry 6Sep 10, 2020 5:18 pm Mining Man Bear in mind that you can't open a fridge door past 90 degrees if it's in the corner, which may impede vegetable drawers sliding fully out (and removing them for cleaning is really difficult too). @Mining Man is correct. You won't be able to open the door enough to remove the crisper drawers or shelves with the fridge in the corner. You often need a gap of 150mm or more to make sure the door opens enough. The fridge in the pantry will also be a pain. When you are cooking you have to walk into the pantry every time you want something from the fridge. It's form over function. The fridge should form that "triangle" between sink and cooktop. The laundry is also tiny with no actual bench space. Personally I'd be rearranging the entire area. It seems like a big house with a compromised kitchen. I'm not trying to be negative, it's just that it's so important that you get the functional areas right. What does the rest of the dining and living look like. Looks like you are a fellow WA. Whereabouts are you building? I do think the changes made by Best Specials were an improvement, by having the entry to the pantry and laundry at one end rather than in the middle. Your current floorplan with a 1100mm gap between fridge and the island will make it very tight to manoeuvre a large fridge into the alcove. We have 1100 and having had to pull out our French door fridge twice recently, it was not easy. Suggest you keep that gap to at least 1200 or 1300mm if possible. Also suggest moving the double sink across by at least 400mm from the corner of the island So you can stack dishes either side of the sink when necessary. Re: Please help me improve my kitchen layout/laundry 9Sep 11, 2020 11:45 am with limited space my suggestions include two fridge options: ..sacrifice the small wardrobe (adding bedroom furniture will show that the current wardrobe restricts the room) and lose the tiny study nook in favour of fridge space and/or move external door from laundry to kitchen, use under stair space for stacked washer, dryer and broom and there's now space for multi purpose counter and sink with wall cabinets and splashback window in the old laundry, use shallow storage shelves (think about the size of what you plan to store and use in the pantry) on one side of the new pantry and full depth counter on the other side, add a setdown space from the hallway side to make the entry more open (with under bench drawers for linen), reverse garage door to avoid blocking the hallway and move the activity door closer to the kitchen for supervision of new study area, use smaller cooktop and sink should be centred on the island for easier serving to dining and alfresco .. reconsider how you move between alfresco and dining to identify best location for door opening..adding furniture to every room will help see where the best doorways should be located Like ⋅ Add a comment ⋅ Pin to Ideaboard ⋅ Re: Please help me improve my kitchen layout/laundry 10Sep 11, 2020 1:17 pm oklouise with limited space my suggestions include two fridge options: ..sacrifice the small wardrobe (adding bedroom furniture will show that the current wardrobe restricts the room) and lose the tiny study nook in favour of fridge space and/or move external door from laundry to kitchen, use under stair space for stacked washer, dryer and broom and there's now space for multi purpose counter and sink with wall cabinets and splashback window in the old laundry, use shallow storage shelves (think about the size of what you plan to store and use in the pantry) on one side of the new pantry and full depth counter on the other side, add a setdown space from the hallway side to make the entry more open (with under bench drawers for linen), reverse garage door to avoid blocking the hallway and move the activity door closer to the kitchen for supervision of new study area, use smaller cooktop and sink should be centred on the island for easier serving to dining and alfresco .. reconsider how you move between alfresco and dining to identify best location for door opening..adding furniture to every room will help see where the best doorways should be located Like ⋅ Add a comment ⋅ Pin to Ideaboard ⋅ Wow i'm amazed by this. I'm not sure how much space is under the stairs to do a full laundry but i love this layout. I'm not sure how much space is under the stairs to do a full laundry but i love this layout. the space under the end of the stairs should be plenty for a stacked washer and dryer or if you decide to omit the sliding external door for the laundry you could have the washer and dryer along the outside wall but try to imagine working in the space and what the counter will be used for eg which style/size fridge suits this kitchen eg tall narrow fridge near the smaller hotplate with a tall narrow freezer at the end of the pantry or consider a fridge drawer under the island instead of a tall fridge..so many choices and too many decisions but seeing the three bedrooms suggests that biw along the bedroom hall walls would be better places for bigger wardrobes and that leaves mores space for a sit down space in the study nook!! Re: Please help me improve my kitchen layout/laundry 12Sep 11, 2020 2:10 pm Thanks Louise will pitch it to the builder! I took the idea of putting the fridge in the study and doing a stand alone robe in the bedroom. As you mentioned the robe location does not match with furnishing. Do you think its a little strange to have a fridge in that location? I dont think i've seen it done before. Just remember to get plumbing to the alcove if you decide to buy a fridge with water and ice dispenser.
