Browse Forums Windows & Doors 1 Jul 24, 2020 3:12 pm I have a love for the black-framed steel doors seen in many beautiful spaces online. Images (added here for examples) of these style doors are so common, and yet I'm being told it's not a simple or a good option. We are building a new home, and I wanted to use this style of doors in our l/shaped open plan living/kitchen area, as I think they're beautiful and has some character. I'm being told these are generally only sold here (I'm in Adelaide) as a commercial product, however, and so they're a very very expensive option, and that they also do not have very good thermal performance. I'd hate to blow our budget on doors that let the heat and cool in/out etc, but would love to know if anyone has personal experience and knowledge of these type doors and windows, is aware of affordable ways to do it, and if they're as energy efficient. The plan is currently drawn to have 2 sets of ~4m lengths of stacker doors (not phased if this is changed to fixed panels with doors), as well ~3.5m worth of fixed windows. Our ceilings are 3.3m so height of glass will need to be quite significant also. Big thank you in advance for any thoughts, advice or information. -Hannah Like ⋅ Add a comment ⋅ Pin to Ideaboard ⋅ Like ⋅ Add a comment ⋅ Pin to Ideaboard ⋅ Like ⋅ Add a comment ⋅ Pin to Ideaboard ⋅ Like ⋅ Add a comment ⋅ Pin to Ideaboard ⋅ Like ⋅ Add a comment ⋅ Pin to Ideaboard ⋅ Like ⋅ Add a comment ⋅ Pin to Ideaboard ⋅ Like ⋅ Add a comment ⋅ Pin to Ideaboard ⋅ Re: Black framed steel doors 2Jul 25, 2020 9:41 pm I know you can get colonial bars added to standard windows so you can get that type of look, not sure about doors. It’s obviously not the same though. Or you could try to get commercial aluminium windows? They’d have that kind of thicker, heavy duty look to them but not quite as costly as steel. If I could afford it, I’d go steel doors for the aesthetics, I can’t see how it would be much worse than normal stacker doors. In terms of thermal efficiency, from what I understand, the choices are a mix of thermally broken frames and double glazing and shading and window treatments, but with such large sections of glass it’s just not going to be as warm as say an insulated wall. Yes they are expensive because they are produced by boutique suppliers and because each panel is individually glazed. A little less efficient in steel And not forgetting steel will rust if it's not maintained. Steel is a necessity for some fire risk properties. Price difference would be steel dearer by a factor of 5. I'm in Adelaide and looking at steel windows from https://adelaidesteelframewindows.com.au with Chevron glass double glazing. Nothing beats the look IMO, but it comes at a cost. I don't find much discussion of them here. Cheers, Simon Re: Black framed steel doors 6Apr 18, 2022 10:36 am simongil Hi Hannah, Did you go with steel windows/doors? Cheers, Simon Hi Simon, Sadly no, and I’ll admit that I’m worried that when the build is complete it’s going to be a big regret- but we were trying to do research, make decisions, find materials and project manage from overseas and so ended up just going with regular black framed glass and sliding doors. They had to be commercial doors due to size, and were done by Southern Star. Completely agree though, nothing beats the look, they’re just beautiful! Definitely come at a cost unfortunately. Cheers, Hannah Re: Black framed steel doors 7Apr 18, 2022 11:39 am Thanks for the update Hannah! Managing all this from OS must have been a challenge. Thanks for the Southern Star reference .. I'll check them out. I hope everything has otherwise gone to plan Cheers, Simon Hi I am wanting some opinions about the build of a steel shed I am going to get one about 4.5 x 2.5 m steel shed and the height will be about 2.3-2.4m high The one I am… 0 14449 The warning is on the sticker on the door too. Second the aluminium powdercoat 6 18203 Thankyou for your advice. We do have Caesar coming out and hopefully resolve the issue for us. 4 18755 |
