If you want to, you will need to frame or trim out the opening and then sheet it flush and then flush coat it in. Because of the tiles you will have to try and cut out the broken tile and put in something to level it up. To get a semi decent finish will cost you a decent amount. If you are going to renovate just neaten it up with a cover, you could always make the cover a small shelving unit.
