Browse Forums Windows & Doors 1 Mar 20, 2020 8:53 pm Hi fellow helpful forum members, I have recently installed a double glazed windows with the intention to make my room more isolated from traffic noise. Since I've installed the double glazed windows, I've noticed a strange phenomenon that the noise blocked from inside to outside of the room almost completely, but the noise coming in from the outside is not blocked significantly enough. As a comparison, when I shout at the top of my voice from inside the room, a person on the other side of the glass would not be able to hear anything. On the other side, a person casually speaking in the outside could be well heard from the inside. I have checked for any noise leaks from the walls or the ceiling but the sound does seem to pass thru the glass directly instead of being limited to any source of leak. It's quite baffling to me and i have not found any expert advice that could possibly shed some light on this matter. Any ideas why such occurrence happen? Thank you for your response and they are greatly appreciated. =) Re: Double glazed windows issue - Noise is not evenly blocke 2Mar 25, 2020 1:57 pm No idea, but it's fascinating... What we think of as being quiet outside is not really that quiet, especially if you live in the city. And even if you live in the country there is still background noise - the wind, the rustle of foliage and the birds. In the city added to this is the sound of traffic. Go outside and listen to confirm this. Even when a shouting noise escapes from inside the house it is attenuated and has to compete with the background noise, so it is not that obvious. Inside the house is much quieter than outside. Not much of the background noise enters from outside and there is not much background noise generated inside the house. When a shouting type sound made outside some of it penetrates the house and because there is less competing background noise the attenuated shouting noise is more obvious. As I said, just a hypothesis. Also I suggest you download a sound meter to your phone and test your results to see if they are real. Let me know... Hi The orientation of the glass is irrelevant, it has the same noise stopping power either way.
