The fact that you have the same issue in two separate areas that were poured on different days tells you that it wasn't a mix problem. The grano workers just haven't done a good job. 100mm driveways and paths are never vibrated, adequate compaction is achieved in the placement, screeding and trowelling. I'd say the job wasn't screeded and bull floated adequately to give the early compaction, then they have rushed the final trowelling which has left too many fines at the surface. Once the retarded layer has been washed off you still have a softer layer that allows the aggregate to fall out and also means that layer that will scratch as you have demonstrated. Sealing will never fix that. Sealer is only to prevent staining as it seals the porosity of the concrete, it doesn't make it harder or prevent the issues you are seeing. Getting it rectified will be the issue. Your contract is with the builder and they will argue that the issues are "minor" and are not considered defective, even though you can easily argue the opposite. Structurally it may be fine, meeting all the requirements for thickness, steel, and various joints but visually it isn't what's expected from a quality exposed agg job. I can see air voids, hence the porosity, below the surface the acid wash and water would have removed the trowelled surface exposing the poor workmanship I'm guessing you don't have the engineering notes/specification for the drive way Strength, Slump, Compaction, vibration, joints, etc would have been hi-lighted for the Concretor? If not then it's buyer beware and always have the concrete placement inspected On the other hand, check with QBCC Cheers Chris Re: Exposed Agg specialist 17Feb 17, 2020 4:02 pm No need to guess what actually went wrong as it's a combination effect ie initial set, lack of compaction/vibration and the concrete should have been inspected What matters happened on the day the concrete was being poured and you weren't prepared for that and I doubt you had the engineering drawings, specifications, notes and it was't Inspected by your engineer.... so you will never know? Lodge a complaint with the QBCC, sorry, but I don't like your chances.
