Browse Forums Building A New House 1 Nov 29, 2019 1:30 pm Hi Everyone, I am currently building a home in Perth, WA (32degress South) and I am struggling with getting my window size and placements correct. The issue I am having is that the living areas of the home face North East. I am not able to change the external walls but I did get an extra provision in my initial contract to change the windows. Can anyone give me some recommendations of how to do my windows? I have attached my house plan for reference. Thank you! North is the front left corner of the WIR and East is the left corner of the Alfresco π Re: Solar Passive Window Size and Placement 4Dec 01, 2019 4:39 pm Hmmm... Its not the best solar passive plan for your block. The family dining room in this house plan will always be dark because the kitchen cupboards will block all the natural light from the North. The best option would be to remove your overhead cupboards and have a large window all the way along your kitchen wall. Make your minor bedroom windows smaller to minimise the heart from the western sun. Your theatre will get the best natural light. I have put in a large strip window from to bench to the the underside of the cupboards most of the way along the wall (similar to the one pictured). Thank you for your help! Re: Solar Passive Window Size and Placement 6Dec 01, 2019 6:33 pm That wouldn't really help, because the point is to try and get some natural light into the living areas. Your kitchen bench will get sunlight, but that won't reach your living/ dining. I have seen variations of this plan by several builders in the past, and it's always a dark house. Summit homes had a display a few years back where they added full height windows and it worked a lot better from a solar passive perspective.
