I think by moving the source of water you've done what you need to stop the crumbling of the bricks (once the moisture level drops), but if you want to go further, you could apply a clear waterproof sealer to both sides after brushing any loose material away and fixing the mortar. To fix the mortar, you can scrap it out a centimetre or so and then re-point with fresh mortar. There are plenty of websites and YouTube videos that will show you the process.
