But yeah, as Joker said, it doesn't need to be sanded right down to being a perfect mirror finish; it should still have some of the texture of the wood. But nowhere near "splinters" roughness. It should be smooth enough that you wouldn't get any splinters nor would you feel your finger jag or catch if you ran your finger along it BEFORE it was estapoled/stained - and then the tinted clear-coat stuff over the top seals it & makes it that little bit smoother. If you run your hand along the balustrade it is so rough you almost get splinters. The stain also looks patchy in the timber. Our SS has told us the painters who stain the staircase should have sanded it down however we will never be able to get a smooth finish? Is this correct? I would have thought that Designer Staircases ought to provide smooth finish in their staircases which are ready to stain without the need for further sanding.
