Browse Forums General Discussion 1 Feb 19, 2019 9:56 am Hi there! I am at the planning stages of making an Outdoor Dining Table approximately 2400x1200 in size and I am wanting to tile the table top within an angle iron frame. I am pondering what would be the best combination of substrates to 1. Support the loads aka, the mortar, tiles and any loads the table might see as it may have a slab and lots of food on it ๐ 2. Something that will be stable enough not to pop the tiles out or crack the grout. I am new to tiling completely. I am a metal worker and wood worker usually. Does anyone have any tips? What grout to use? A flexible mortar? Put down a 9mm Marine ply with a HardiFlex 4.5mm sheet over the top to mortar the tiles to? How to attach those two sheets? I am just a bit out of my depth due to not wanting movement underneath from moisture and humidity to crack tiles and grout. Thank you in advance for any help!! ๐ค Like ⋅ Add a comment ⋅ Pin to Ideaboard ⋅ Re: Substrate for Tiled Table Top??? 2Feb 19, 2019 10:24 am Personally I'd use either compressed sheet fibre cement or Hardies Scyon Secura exterior flooring. The Scyon only comes 600wide so you will need to join it but it is lighter and easier to work with. Check with your tile supplier regards the tile adhesive but it may be worth using a rubberised glue to allow for expanding and contracting particularly if it's going to be in the sun. I'm going to be building one myself soon, so I'll be interested to see how you get on. Re: Substrate for Tiled Table Top??? 4Feb 19, 2019 11:10 am From your experience does Marine Ply have much movement? I'm just not sure how strong fc sheets are as far as supporting loads. Thinking about pairing a 9mm Marine Ply sheet with a 4.5mm Fc Sheet so the ply can have slight movement under the fc sheet and hopefully won't affect the fc sheet on top that it is fixed to. And maybe attaching those two together with some sort of rubberised thin set tile adhesive, if you the same stuff I would use to lay the tiles. No, I even have sections of narrowness where the tiles won't slide up any further. When I manage some spare time, I might play around with the first DIY part of my… 7 4932 Thank you so much.
