Browse Forums Pools & Spas Re: Fiberglass Pool Bleaching under the water line 23May 31, 2018 7:31 pm  aussietai am seeing terms such as "chlorine too high" "chlorine balanced" "chlorine off the scale" the fc must be in relationship to the cya level so 20ppm fc would be maximum for a 50ppm cya level and 20ppm fc could bleach liner below 50ppm cya a fas dpd chlorine test does not have a maximum limit so there is no off the scale how about some accurate numbers from a quality test kit There is off the scale for most test kits . They ususally have a max reading of 6 so above that would be deemed off he scale or excessively high . There is no Exact level that high level chlorine will cause damage but a prolonged period above 5 would be deemed fault of chlorine bleached pool . Other factors such as ph and cya can make it worse . Do you think i would have this issue with saltwater? or is this only chlorine pools? Salt water pool are chlorine . They adjusted seasonally . You have a higher output in summer to winter . If you leave it on a summer setting in winter it will over chlorinate . Thanks for the reply. Other symptom rather than bleached surface due to overchlorination is the chalky surface on the wall which you can actually move this chalky stuff with your hand. Do you think it can be completely removed by sanding as well. Is it also due to overchlorination? Some people deer to gelcoat being compromised. It is a classic case of over chlorinating for a long period of time . I went and looked at a pool last week only 15month old . It isn’t as bad as the one in this photo but has first signs of over chlorinating. Customer stated his pool guy was maintaining his pool so it must be correct . A test showed chlorine level off the scale . Speaking with people in the industry it is a common problem at the moment . Even concrete pools are getting damaged finishes for the same reason . We are now using automation which will only turn the chlorinator on when level drops . It’s expensive now but will be the norm in 5-10 years . Then this problem will be a thing of the past . Ours does seem to be getting worse...but for the past 12 months our chlorine levels have been fine and in normal range - so WHY does it seem to be getting worse? We are running the Astral Viron E Quilibium chlorinator which is meant to only come on when chlorine is low - but is it maybe doing too much? We do put stabiliser (same as CYA?) in pool but keep levell around 30. SO why is this happening? Our pool is not even 3yrs old yet and it is quite upsetting to see! It is a bit white chalky but only is some places...is there anything at all we can do or put in the water to improve it? I feel like we wasted so much money on a nice looking pool - and were promised by the pool company of a sparkly fancy pool gelcoat with a great warranty and now they are blaming us and don't want to know!! I can get them when I get home. I have since found out that it is a manufacturing fault most likely, with a batch of gelcoats around the same time our pool was put in, but the pool companies are using too much chlorine as an excuse not to uphold their guarantee! So basically we are stuck with a fadiing pool after only 2yrs and the pool company won't own up! I will be investigating further and contact Consumer Affairs! I would be very interested to hear from anybody else please with this problem. Please feel free to msg me. thanks. Hi Kazboo - we have a barrier reef pool which is also only 2 years old. Same deal as yours - fading below the waterline. The chlorinator provided by the pool company is an automatic one so we don't really need to do anything with regards to the chlorine levels. we do monitor them and they have always been fine. never off the charts at - in fact ours is the other way round. I have seen a number of post regarding the same issue by barrier reef pools on a product review website but doesn't look like people have much luck fighting it. It’s only seen when the water level is low. The gel coating also doesn’t feel as smooth too. We got it from Riverina 🙁 Anyone had any luck with them offering assistance? Hi, which state do you live in? Ask Riverina first but they will probably ask you for water test results and will tell you that your chlorine level had been high even if it is around 3ppm and tell you the cause is due to chlorine bleaching. And also tell you that water results from pool stores are not accurate and the best way is to measure it by the pool service man on the spot. I was thinking the same thing that if there are quite a few people in same situation after 2-3 years could it be a gel coating issue??? We had someone out to look at the pool about a year or so ago and they said it was a build of metal plating which could be down to the actual water we fill out pool with. (This was Riverina). They said nothing could really be done to remove it and the gel coating wouldn’t have been compromised. The cell is always clean and no calcium build up either. We have a similar problem and the Pool Company have just washed their hands of it. Our daughter has been unwell . She was unwell last summer and now this summer and we have had many tests done, and it may be our pool We are not sure, we just want to be able to eliminate it from our own investigations. Just our pool (as she had swimming lessons during winter and she was fine then) We have asked the pool company many times if our pool is safe to swim in and they have avoided the question. They also have not put anything in writing (ie to tell us for sure what the problem is) - If they had said that it is safe to swim in in writing then I don’t think I would be here now. They have said over the phone that it is Chlorine Bleaching. But no explanation of when it happened, how it happened or even why it happened or how to fix it and if there are any health concerns. I think it maybe have been a problem with the gelcoat and they are trying to cover it up. But how are we supposed to know? Also our pool was built on a day that it rained and in 100% humidity (which is making me think that the pool did not cure completely) - And they did not want to release the manufacturing date, in fact they made it extremely difficult to get it? Our pool surface also has "Cobalt blue" in it which is a toxic substance. (I have not been told this, I have had to get the pool surface tested) Has our gelcoat broken down and is it breaking down into the pool? So many questions and they have all " gone quiet " and avoiding the issue. Which when our daughter is sick , and they know, and have told the gel coat manufacturer not to talk to us either! (as we have tried to ask them the content of the gel coat, and how it is applied etc...) All we are looking for is answers and they need to be facts , not just opinions.  Our pool is now just 2 years old. We have been asking for answers for 7 months now. We are guessing that there are more out there, and not aware that there might be health issues that could be associated with it , not just cosmetic. Even if it is just cosmetic, our pool is just 2 years old! Disclaimer : Everything I have posted above is the truth, I am only thinking that my daughters health has been affected by the pool, because of the tests that I have had completed, and the reluctance from the pool company to answer any of my questions and to answer whether my pool is safe to swim in, despite seeing the daily "balanced" water reports and still not providing a written report to say what is wrong with my pool. The photos are in no way made up, and neither is the content above or the age of the pool. I am here just looking for facts on the subject.
