Browse Forums Building A New House 1 Jan 15, 2019 1:01 pm We’re In the process of finalising our house plans and now considering an exposed brick feature wall in the living room, more than likely on the wall where the TV will be located. Was thinking this might give some warmth, texture and interest to what will be a fairly large room 6.8m x 5.5m. I have no idea of the cost, am guessing maybe $1200-$1500 (?) extra. Any thoughts or advice on this would be welcome 😀 Re: Using exposed brick for a feature wall 2Jan 15, 2019 1:29 pm We're doing one in our entrance, to use as a gallery wall. It's basically the garage wall bricks facing the inside of the house, rather than being inside the garage. I think it looks fantastic and brings a lot of character to a home. If you ever get sick of it you can just have the wall plastered in the future or have it painted. We really wanted to do recycled bricks, but I was unsure of how the finish would come up, so we left it as the same face brick that is used on the exterior of our house (assumed the cost would also be a lot higher with the recycled brick). We got the joints done raked as a compromise, which was only $270 extra. As you say it can always be gyprocked over in the future if you want a change. I was looking at PGH Stonewash Double Height bricks as a feature wall. Our external house bricks will be PGH Oyster and I’m not so sure they would look good as an exposed brick inside our house. What do you think? 🤔 Re: Using exposed brick for a feature wall 4Jan 15, 2019 2:39 pm I guess it depends on your overall colour scheme. The brown/grey bricks seem to be really in fashion. I really like the exposed brick, we were initially hoping to build an industrial style home, but we've had to tone it down a bit due to cost. Re: Using exposed brick for a feature wall 5Jan 15, 2019 2:58 pm The only thing i will mention is make sure you have a brick with colour all the way through, you wouldn’t want a feature wall with bricks that may get chipped and show another colour underneath Re: Using exposed brick for a feature wall 7Jan 15, 2019 3:21 pm gogo65 The only thing i will mention is make sure you have a brick with colour all the way through, you wouldn’t want a feature wall with bricks that may get chipped and show another colour underneath Good tip, thx Re: Using exposed brick for a feature wall 11Jan 20, 2019 10:38 am Bebbsy Unfortunately our builder, Statesman Homes, informed us that exposed brick walls are not an option if we build with them. Very disappointed. Maybe a blessing. There’s so many cool looking wallpapers these days, they would be a better option than committing to an actual brick wall and associated cost. Plus if you ever grow tired of it just replace it or remove and paint. We did discuss that but my other half was not convinced, so we dropped the idea. Just going with gyprock walls now.
