I am new to this. We have a 1990s house with Aluminium windows and sliding patio doors.
Some have this metal bit at the bottom end where the sliding door meets the full glass window. We think it’s part of the full window glass.
One of it is quite loose.
2 questions
1) are these structural to the window? Will we need to replace it?
2) can I find spare parts in Bunnings? What do I call them?
3)as they are full gray in color to start with and one of the heavily scratched ones is a little shiny under, my mate thinks it could be pieces of lead flashing. If so how do I really tell? When I tap it it sounds about the same as the white powder coated Aluminium but above. if it is, then will a damage bit cause leaks or anything (say it’s used as flashing?) also they are quite assessable to the kids being so exposed and kids love to put trains on the tracks of the window and bang them in all directions. I tried to scratch it and needed to use some force (not a lot) and the pic is what it looks like (the white shiny bit exposed).
Is there a way to cover it up to make it safe if it’s lead and we have to replace like for like?
We have no experience with such things as you can tell and getting a glazier or window replaced is a little out of budget at the moment. My mate thinks maybe we can lift the grill door and change it out ourselves if we know what the loose metal bit is for, called, and made of.
The affected window with the loose bit isn’t giving way at all but the metal bit does rattle a lot compared to similar bits found on other windows.
Thanks!
