Browse Forums Owner Builder Forum 1 Nov 30, 2018 9:06 am I am in WA and need to hire a building surveyor, can anyone offer advice on what to ask, how to assess potential candidates. I also need to hire an engineer for the roof sign off and loft floor details, etc. So ditto for that process if anyone has any advice. I just assume that I can obtain quotes and just look at the cheapest option, whether this is a good idea or not? Re: How to choose/assess a potential building inspector/surv 2Dec 01, 2018 7:01 am Since construction has flat lined in Perth, There are some ridiculously low rates to be had, good for you Here are some tips 1. Lofts require full engineering certification this is done by an Engineer not by a Building Surveyor 2. Consider 3D Engineering BIM which comes in handy for OB's in detailing, specifying, quantifying, costing etc,etc 3, Best price can be achieved if the project and obligations are clearly defined for all parties quoting 4.5.6 etc Designer,Engineer (Civil,Const & Envir),Builder,Concrete & Masonry Contract.Struct Repairs Re: How to choose/assess a potential building inspector/surv 3Dec 01, 2018 12:15 pm Thanks for the info, I take your point on the entirety of the loft spec. Re: 3D BIM, as you might recall from another of my posts that you answered, I'm doing a design in Revit, I looked at using sketchup, which I really like the usability, however, it seems the BIM functionality is made up of add-ons of which I am not sure which are best to use or which are complete and which functionality I really will USE. ie window schedules/area calculations/wall types (timber/brick veneer) I think sketchup might be good for detail call outs, but revit better for the overall design and doing a render of the entire project so I can evaluate the aesthetics better. Again, you might cut through this all, and recommend a BIM extension(s). But for the moment, I'm stuck between continuing with Revit, or do more research on sketchup add-ons. Re: How to choose/assess a potential building inspector/surv 4Dec 01, 2018 12:39 pm I am assuming you only require an evaluation copy of the software for a one off project over a short period of time? You will never get your head around revit families within that period Or, Let me guess you are an aspiring architect and you don't want to count windows? $5K for revit to schedule windows is a bit steep for my liking.. I am using an old academic version of Revit which I am using more for evaluation as the design/beyond the floor plan and initial roof will be done by someone else. If I were to do the entire design myself, I might consider using Revit on their monthly subscription, however I am leaning toward sketchup, as that would allow me to do more of the desing and experiment more. At the moment, I am unsure of what extensions to use in Sketchup for BIM functionality. Any recommendations? Re: How to choose/assess a potential building inspector/surv 6Dec 01, 2018 6:57 pm I have since come to the conclusion that, sketchup pro includes enough for BIM (my limited requirements), with the included LayOut. If I were to use sketchup make (free) then I would add the Skalp plug in, its about $80 - 100, and allows for creation of plans and sections. I hope this helps anyone that also is evaluating sketchup/revit. Re: How to choose/assess a potential building inspector/surv 7Dec 01, 2018 9:23 pm Andre2018 Sketchup Pro has the tools for architecture Free sketchup is very basic Another consideration is Sketchup pro can be imported into other consultants BIM software They should also be able to export to sketchup pro Designer,Engineer (Civil,Const & Envir),Builder,Concrete & Masonry Contract.Struct Repairs I would send it to the certifier who is technically your representative and working on your behalf not the builder's 1 2264 All 3 items listed are defects and are of concern. Please seek qualified independent inspector and/or legal advice for your state. 1 8213 I do enjoy the drama:-D In his latest two videos he has started bringing security guards to site, I am waiting for the punch on to begin lol 6 45547 |
