My question is, how do I stump the new floor bearer? I can't get a stump close to the end as the existing structure has stumps there, and I cannot put the new bearer on the existing stumps, as there is no room. Do I put stumps as close to the end of the bearer as I can (and obviously one in the middle), and then just screw the bearer ends to tie them into the existing structure? I know stump pitch etc is dictated by building regs, it's just the bearer end condition I don't understand. Thanks for any help, Ape Re: Extending Floor Structure 3Sep 02, 2018 9:14 am aussieta, It is a very simple reno. Is this what this forum is for, when people ask questions they are told to go to an architect/engineer? My post just asks is a simple question. Any information I gather will go past an engineer and be put in a planning and building permit application. Re: Extending Floor Structure 4Sep 02, 2018 9:18 am you can double your new joists to your existing joists with new stumps at the red line
but the bottom line is it may not get passed by council not trying to be smart but you dont want to have to rip it all out all these home reno shows make it look easy your lintel size needs to be engineered your stumps will need soil test and engineering if you are looking to do it without permits, then sister your new joists length three times their height (my opinion) stumps 500mm deep lintel as big as you can Re: Extending Floor Structure 5Sep 02, 2018 9:31 am "but you dont want to have to rip it all out", a very fair point, thank you. I feel uncomfortable doing stuff and wondering if my house insurance will be invalid if there is a fire, because I did some 'unofficial' reno. Therefore I will be getting the correct permits, but as a draftsman (not architectural), I like to at least get the drawings started, and lay things out to make sure it is all going to work OK. I figured the new joist will be supported at one end on the old wall bearer no problems, the span (bearer spacing) is within building regulations. It's the positioning of the stumps on the new wall that is the issue. Whatever I do leaves a cantilever at each end of the bearer, unless I can tie the ends in to the existing bearers on either side. If there was a way of structurally doing this, I would only need one stump in the middle. I'm thinking I now need three stumps, the outer ones just as close to the ends as possible. I'm figuring I can't get the stumps at the very ends as there will be a mass of concrete around the existing stump I am trying to get close to. Re: Extending Floor Structure 9Sep 02, 2018 10:28 am The roof will be a simple 'lean to' roof, tucked underneath the existing eave. It's only 3 metres wide, sloping 5deg (I think, or the minimum allowed for colorbond). That and the old wall lintel size all need working out, all beyond my knowledge.I have done a rough section to check the ceiling height will be ok, but need someone to work out the finer details. Roofs, that is something I really don't want to get wrong! There is no reason why building contract reconciliation cannot be done prior to handover, if the builder won't do it get someone to do it for you.
