I hope they find homes soon. On to plants, the acacia will grow to 2-3m wide. The grevillea on the other hand will grow 1-2m wide. Being natives both will encourage bees & birds into your yard. Fruit trees would be great but i'd go for dwarf varieties. If you plant trees that grow too big width-wise as well as height-wise your yard may become too shady, especially in winter, if you choose plants that are evergreen. As for the bunnies, maybe consider doing raised garden beds so as to make it harder to get to your plants. It might also give you more plant choice. Btw, i'm not a horticulturist or landscaper or anything - just passing on experience Building SOR with Dreamstart Homes Customised Dream Dior/Summer Sensation https://forum.homeone.com.au/viewtopic.php?f=31&t=83776 Re: {Dawn} SE Melb Build - Long journey nearly over! 2888May 13, 2018 10:12 am Its so tricky, my list of concerns: - Bunnies chewing on the bottom of the plants - Cats using trees to escape the backyard - Trees growing too large/sucking up all the water from the grass/casting too much shade - Leaves falling and having to rake, or fruit falling - Being high maintenance - West facing, so needs to cope with a lot of sun and dryness in summer I only have 10.5m across and my backyard is only about 3m wide. I really want something that is going to hide the timber fence, and basically be a green wall and give something interesting to look at from inside the lounge. D So I'm open to suggestions, I wanted the garden bed to be about 50cm wide from the fence. And I was thinking some sort of grassy plant underneath trees, but now I have no idea XD Gardening is not my forte, though the front yard has finally come together. Re: {Dawn} SE Melb Build - Long journey nearly over! 2889May 13, 2018 11:02 am May i suggest you paint the fence in either your light render colour or your feature colour. Then you could plant a couple of cordylines (if you go with the feature colour, then opt for ones that have bright pink/red in the leaves like the fruticosa) and underplant with a fine leaved lomandra. Otherwise, put up a couple rows of wire and train a climber on it; hardenbergia, snakevine, pandorea, potatovine or banksia rose even & keep your fruit trees in pots (you could take them when (if) you move Building SOR with Dreamstart Homes Customised Dream Dior/Summer Sensation https://forum.homeone.com.au/viewtopic.php?f=31&t=83776 Re: {Dawn} SE Melb Build - Long journey nearly over! 2890May 14, 2018 10:49 am I was going to suggest a climber as well. Hopefully they wouldn't look too attractive to the cats to climb, although Mali will try to climb everything, even brick walls! I think she thinks she is a spider and a dog and a parrot. Option 1 Pros: - Bunnies cant eat the trees - Evergreen, no raking etc - Cats can't use it to climb out Cons: - Having to shape the plants - Can be expensive for these sort of plants Option 2 Pros: - Get fruit - Pretty seasonal flowers, leaf changes - Bare rooted trees are cheap now - Bunnies cant eat the trees Cons: - Lots of care needed - Cats can escape/trees grow large - Raking/falling fruit Option 3: Pros: - Native, low maintenance, handle the heat well - No raking, no falling fruit - Unlikely cats can escape (can keep hedged below fence line) - Plants are cheap Cons: - Bunnies could eat the plants So what option do you guys think would be best? - Re: {Dawn} SE Melb Build - Long journey nearly over! 2894May 16, 2018 4:50 pm I think we're going to have to fence off our front yard from the wild bunnies . Lots of our neighbours have had to already. We were getting away with leaving the plants exposed, but they seem to have eaten their way to our house. The street just to our north seems to be their corridor between the hill and the river, the closer you are to the end of the street the worse you get hit. We need our north neighbours to move in and do their garden. Re: {Dawn} SE Melb Build - Long journey nearly over! 2897May 16, 2018 8:43 pm You should build a one way fence, so once the bunnies come into your yard you can keep them XDD I've never heard of someone having wild bunnies eating their garden. That's a tough one!! Mine is just my pet bunnies. I wish I could raise the garden bed, but don't have the time, money or know how to do that. I do like the natives, and at $20 a plant they are very affordable! Re: {Dawn} SE Melb Build - Long journey nearly over! 2900May 23, 2018 6:50 pm Looks very homely with the new chair. I see its already been claimed. So cute. I work with owner, he/she is my man on the ground and I instruct them when to visit the site and take photos and I have other tools in the bag. 4 15439 I am in the same situation, would you be able to give some insights in to this? I am in SA 8 17191 Depends what you're current inclusions are, but we're not including wardrobes and will just use second hand ones until we can save later on to get them built. Also have a… 3 11822 |
