Browse Forums Building Standards; Getting It Right! 1 Apr 28, 2018 1:55 pm Hi guys, We had our new house completed about 6 months ago and then we did a side path around the house pretty much immediately. There have been a few small hairline cracks for the concrete path, which I understood is fairly common so am not too worried (let me know if I'm wrong!). However, I started noticing that the colour around the crack is darker and am wondering why or if I should be concern? Does it look like this when it hasn’t rained for a while?
Does the ‘stain’ clean off with hose? ie. is it superficial stain due to water taking longer to dry out here due to the hairline crack and settling of debris. In picture I think I saw some slight staining/discoloration around the pit edges. (I’m guessing you had concrete sealed?) I have hairline cracks in some places where expansion joints were not cut right up to house. I think it’s common for concreters to not install expansion foam around plastic drain pits and down pipes. By the way I like the idea of stones along side of path! Re: Dark colour around concrete crack 4May 07, 2018 8:48 pm Hi Gaudi, the 'stain' does 'dry up' and not there when the weather is sunny. And when it rains, it gets darker. Pretty odd I thought. And yes, I have it sealed. I did find this on the net - https://www.everything-about-concrete.c ... apage.html Not sure if it is similar to me....? And thanks for the stones comment! In the basement article water seems to be seeping from below the concrete. Is that what you are thinking? Are your darker areas because of water settling in cracks/gaps from on top and taking longer to evaporate? Try tipping some water from a bottle? Re: Dark colour around concrete crack 6May 21, 2018 9:45 pm That's just water that's stuck in the cracks coming up the concrete. It is normal. You can see the same darker patches around the grate and the corners. You have the concrete sealed. You don't have the crack sealed and if you did, the contraction and expansion would soon negate that. Crack eminating from corner of grate is normal. Most likely poor foam installation and render installation, Joint covered with render, foam could be sitting on flashing. Do you have any render at house 4 9314 Grab a hose, insert it at the top of the inlet/down pipe and turn the water on and see where the water is escaping from.
