Browse Forums Building A New House Re: Bricks vs cladding 3Feb 05, 2018 7:00 am First stop for any potential home owner, especially those considering building, should be the Government's Your Home website (or book). There it says: Quote: Clay and concrete brickwork have low thermal resistance and therefore relatively poor insulation values. Combined with internal and external air films and a cavity, they achieve moderate thermal resistance. The thermal resistance of brick and blockwork walls, including veneer or cavity construction, can be greatly enhanced by adding foil or bulk insulation. Wall insulation should be accompanied by appropriate detailing to avoid thermal transfers by bridging through window and door frames, by radiation through window openings or by convection through leakage (see Insulation). and Quote: Cladding systems often contribute little to overall wall insulation values. Specific performance is outlined under ‘Cladding options’ below. Several composite cladding products include insulation: those with higher R-values (the measure of a material’s resistance to heat flow) can eliminate the need for bulk insulation between the frame members in many climates. With adequately designed and correctly installed vapour cavities, condensation risk can be reduced or eliminated. Note that EPS (expanded polystyrene) is a vapour barrier so it is essential to have drying and drainage cavities for these systems in condensation-prone climates. Re: Bricks vs cladding 4Feb 05, 2018 9:41 am We paid extra for full face brick as well, we just prefer the look of it. Re: Bricks vs cladding 5Feb 05, 2018 9:56 am We had no choice due to a covenant on our land. Full brick. Re: Bricks vs cladding 7Feb 05, 2018 4:11 pm k3nnis Do the project home builders offer double brick construction or only brick and gyprock? If they do I wonder has any asked how much it would cost extra for a double storey? I did ask for the double brick option and the quoted me approx 300K extra Re: Bricks vs cladding 8Feb 05, 2018 5:16 pm deepugjacob k3nnis Do the project home builders offer double brick construction or only brick and gyprock? Too much Bricks vs cladding 9Feb 05, 2018 6:49 pm As most project home builders only offer brick veneer, its mainly aesthetic as to whether you choose brick or cladding. (The frames hold the house and roof together and the insulation in between provides the thermal comfort.) Some project home builders also offer Hebel as an alternative to brick. Hebel is popular if you like the rendered look. We liked the brick look so we changed most of our cladding to brick except for the front balcony which has vertical cladding.
