Re: Got a quote for Star Serve system a bit too much ? 6Mar 04, 2009 10:24 am The Data Guys . I wouldn't get switches or patch leads from Clipsal. They will cost more as does the modulator. Try to source them elsewhere to save a few bucks. Try to source them elsewhere to save a few bucks. They are part of the Pro Pack well that sucks then doesn't it. My catalogue is a little old and doesn't have the pro pack in it. Cheers for the clarification. I got a modulator to do the same job for $67 when clipsal were asking $200! Licenced Sparky and Data Cabler If "The Data Guys" is too long to type, TDG will do. Re: Got a quote for Star Serve system a bit too much ? 10Mar 16, 2009 12:51 pm That sounds like a reasonable price.
Do you have any idea on the cost of having it installed? I'm seriously interested in having my home wired up with Ethernet Cat 6 at least. I have my electricals and colour appointment tomorrow so I will get PD prices then just would like some comparison for say 6 points. I have my electricals and colour appointment tomorrow so I will get PD prices then just would like some comparison for say 6 points. I contacted Argus Technologies today for the second time. I didn't ask them about their $3.8K package, however I asked about the cost of installing an extra data (CAT5e) point, and the lady said it'd be $105 which is quite a lot. You should ask them if they allow a 3rd party electrician to do it for you. It'd definitely be cheaper than what PD charge. I will be having 24 data points and 20 TV points, so if the electricians in this forum can provide us with an estimate for running the cables from the cabinet to each point, that'd be appreciated. If you could add the cost of installing the antenna, that's be great. I'm not sure if Rod is a certified electrician ! Rod ? The Data Guys in Sydney seem to be knowledgeable but I can't pay for their travelling cost Cost of System: $1.8K Cost of 305m CAT5e: ~$150 Cost of 305m RG6 Quad Shielded: ~$125 Re: Got a quote for Star Serve system a bit too much ? 12Mar 16, 2009 3:28 pm I can get Krone 305m cat5e for $78. That was for solid core.
And RG6 quad shield 305m I got for $85 Re: Got a quote for Star Serve system a bit too much ? 13Mar 16, 2009 3:56 pm iTalk Zerosignal That sounds like a reasonable price. I am having 10 data points and 7 TV points. Including parts (ie. connecting blocks, face plates etc) It is costing me $1800 ($1200 for 3 days labour) to have it installed and then I payed about 400 for the cables including Home Theatre cabling. The above figure is the maximum number of points I could think of. Until the building commences, I could come up with a more realistic figure. For an instant, I don't think I'll need TV points in each room, and I might cut the TV points into 4 instead of 6 in the Rumpus and the Family rooms. Are you going to have 12 computers set up in those rooms? Re: Got a quote for Star Serve system a bit too much ? 18Mar 16, 2009 6:15 pm I might not place the Foxtel decoder in the StarServe cabinet, instead it'll be either in the Master bedroom, the Family room, or the Rumpus. I will cut down the RG6 into 4 instead of 6. As I said above, the figure is for the maximum points possible.
Using the patch panel, one cable will run from the Foxtel dish, and the other one will be the distribution cable (from the decoder to the starserve cabinet to the entire house). The same thing applies to the second pair (as the wife tends to have the UBI satellite TV subscription). The other two pair in the rumpus will have the same purpose. As for the CAT6 cables, I prefer as many data points as possible. 2x Desktop PC and Mac 1x Xbox360 1x HTPC 1x Network printer/scanner 1x fax It'd be a good option once the CAT6-HDMI adapters become cheaper, so yeah but then again, a deep thoughts when things become serious, might cut down the number of the data points to cope with the 12-port switches supplied by Clipsal. Re: Got a quote for Star Serve system a bit too much ? 19Mar 16, 2009 6:24 pm oh ok.. I have foxtel iq2 (HD) so they don't have RF out, so I couldn't do that anyway. Plus I wouldn't want to have SD quality being distributed. So instead I just put component cable from theatre to lounge and that will do me. I can move the foxtel box to bedroom if I wanted to as the TV points do both fox and fta with the optic fibre network.
I have an xbox 360 and PS3 and may put other network equipment, but I will just have one network point and use a switch in the theatre room to increase my inputs. Re: Got a quote for Star Serve system a bit too much ? 20Mar 16, 2009 6:29 pm What's the maximum length allowed for component cables ? Our family room is close the lounge room so it's not a problem, but I'm concerned about the Master where it's at least 14m away from the rumpus.
