Browse Forums Flooring & Floor Covering Re: carpet confusion! Which choice best plush vs twist 100% wool 4Mar 03, 2009 7:36 am I agree but it does come down to the colour with wools I would stay away from the lighter colours are we talking about 100% wool or 80/20 which is a big difference.
Craig Re: carpet confusion! Which choice best plush vs twist 100% wool 5Mar 03, 2009 8:17 am A quality wool carpet can last for 20 years or more so you have to like what you choose for a long time. Wool is easy to maintain and it cleans well and stain removal is easy.
Keep the WoolSafe website on your favorites so that when you have a spill you can deal with it straight away. When yo uneed a good carpet cleaner there is a serach facility for a local WoolSafe Certified operator. So buy wool with confidence. As far as twist or plush goes. Twist plie has a tighter twist rate on the tufts and this helps in a number of ways. It resists pile crush and pile shading which is a condition that can affect all piled carpets and fabrics. Reverse pile shading gives you the light and dark areas that develop over time as the pile leans one way or another. If it leans towards you it looks dark. If it leans away form you it looks light. THis can anoy the heck out of some people but others hardly notice it. Twist pile resists this effect more than one with less twist. Loop pile carpets do it even less. Shading can develop in any fibre. It is not specific to only wool. Get the best quality underlay you can afford. If you choose a quality wool carpet then you can expect 20 years and your underlay must last this time as well. As Craig says keep some offcuts just in case but a good repairer can hide joins on nearly any carpet. But treat spills as they occur using the spot removal guide on the WoolSafe Website and it will look good for many years. cheers Col Nation For information on caring for wool and other carpet and upholstery go to www.woolsafe.com.au Re: carpet confusion! Which choice best plush vs twist 100% wool 6Mar 03, 2009 8:32 am We have 4 children, and 100% wool carpet...and an asthmatic...and have had NO problems so far. I love our carpet, it's so soft, and it's one thing that everyone comments on! Both the layer and the carpet experts on here (as well as the guy who sold it to us, of course! ) told us we'd never wear it out, it's that good! Ours is Cavalier Bremworth, who I know have a good reputation. Good luck deciding! Solidarity, not solidity.......The Lexicon of Life Re: carpet confusion! Which choice best plush vs twist 100% wool 7Mar 03, 2009 6:46 pm Thanks for all the replies. We are leaning towards the plush as all our children have cast their vote for the "soft" one! The carpet is mainly in the upstairs (bedrooms) area so hopefully staining will not be a big problem.
Has anyone heard of this Supertuft brand? Is it a good brand and is $275/ linear metre a good price? Petal, what underlay do you have under your 100% wool carpet? Thanks again for all the advice Re: carpet confusion! Which choice best plush vs twist 100% wool 9Mar 03, 2009 9:05 pm The only thing I don't like about plush is that it shows the footprints and vacuum marks etc. But some people are not as worried about things like that.
I have kids and I'm going to a no pile carpet, but it's just the cheap builder's stuff. We will replace it in the future, most likely with a good quality wool one. There were some we saw that did this, and I think it would annoy me, but the Metropol wasn't too bad. Re: carpet confusion! Which choice best plush vs twist 100% wool 11Mar 04, 2009 11:09 pm not too sure if anyone has covered this but wool being obviously a natural product its a great insulator... cool in summer and warm in winter, you cant get this in any synthetic carpet...
Wool is also very fire retardant, drop an iron on a wool carpet and you may get a few burnt fibres... on a synthetic go and replace it lol. I saw that you have kids... id probably suggest that you have wool carpets in the bedrooms and a good quality synthetic SDN (solution dyed nylon) for the lounge room, kids playroom, games room etc so for everyday spills and soiling at least your covered by a manafacturs guarentee. Last but not least,,,, plush and twist although extremely soft under foot will eventually fall and create noticable traffic areas (you mostly see this in hallways and bedroom doorways). go any style of loop pile Hope this helps Re: carpet confusion! Which choice best plush vs twist 100% wool 12Mar 04, 2009 11:15 pm oh i forgot.... rubber and foam.... personal prefrence, rubber is great for stairs as it has allowance for movement (you usually drag nont step on stairs) however foam has a more consistent feel.
they both are recycled products,,,, personal prefrence is definately rubber, but allllllllwayssss use a very good quality rubber or foam. the underlay is just as important as your carpet Re: carpet confusion! Which choice best plush vs twist 100% wool 13Mar 05, 2009 8:18 pm Thanks for all the advice, it has made the decsion process easier! Due to Petal's remarks we are looking at a plush in Cavalier Bremworth's range, colour: society. We have decided to go with Dunlop Ultimate underlay.
That carpet SuH looks beautiful, hope you are close to making a decision too. Re: 14Jun 03, 2009 1:07 am SuH Hi SuH We have ordered Metropol "Linear Logic"......you obviously have excellent taste. We ended up with the colour "Proportion" which is a mid-brown. It won't be installed for a few weeks, so we can't help you with any pics yet...sorry. That carpet SuH looks beautiful, hope you are close to making a decision too. If its not too late, I'd suggest Dunlop Excellay in preference to Ultimate. Samantha, You are looking at some up market carpets, but I have this concern..... An 80oz carpet will be exceptionally thick. I tend to suggest NOT choosing such a thick carpet. Although I DO promote densely tufted carpets, if they are very thick, you are just wastiing money, and a thinner carpet will probably perform better. This is because the thicker the carpet, the more room there is for compression and tracking. The "oz" rating refers to the weight of a square yard of the carpet. There are perfectly good dense pile wool carpets that will last years & years that are no more then around 40oz. I think heavier weight carpets are just not worth the extra $$$. And yeah.... Cavalier Bremworth are some of the best tufted carpets you can buy! Ash. Hi All, see above image.
