Browse Forums Bathrooms and Laundry 1 Sep 02, 2017 10:45 pm We are nearing the end of our shower/toilet reno and the ceilings are a mess. They originally weren't too bad - they had architraves which the tiler removed (tearing layer in lots of spots), and then the electrician has made a number of holes. The painter has said that the large holes are going to be tricky to patch, and it's a messy surface. Project is already way over budget, and timing is tight so looking for a cost effective solution. Any thoughts? How hard would it be to sheet over the existing ceiling myself (I have no experience, but go ok with a measuring tape) and would I use gyprock? Or too hard to find studs? Or I could try to remove existing ceiling and start fresh? Or encourage painter to do his best? Or bite the bullet and pay a professional? Any expertise would be much appreciated. Then you just need to cut a piece of gyprock to size, pit it in the hole then fix to your new bit of timber. Simple matter then to patch the screw holes and the area between old and new gyprock. What to do with toilet/shower ceiling 3Sep 03, 2017 10:26 am If you were going to replace or sheet over, the time to do that would have been before the tiles went on to hide the ragged edges. That leaves patching an painting. As joannapaulp has said, the holes can be done with a little effort, but more difficult will be to get a decent flat skim coat of wet plaster where the plaster board covering has been torn. However, with a little patience and doing the application and sanding in thin layers you could get there. That said, the best bet would be to get a professional plasterer who will do it as a small cash job. Shouldn't cost more than a few hundred dollars. After a first couple of crazy high quotes l got a reasonable one today so will leave it to the pros. Very handy tip Joanna - will definitely keep that in mind. Thanks!
