Browse Forums Windows & Doors 1 Jul 28, 2017 6:13 pm Hello everyone, I have built my house with the huge help from this forum three years ago. Now I am back I have north facing front of the house with two bedroom windows. Both windows are awning style 900 x 1800. It gets really hot in my bedroom in summer and inside curtains don't help that much. I started to think about awning blinds (material type) and got couple of quotes from Kresta, Burns for Blinds and another small company. I am not sure is it really cost this much, but Kresta gave me a quote for $2,500, Burns for Blinds - $1,500 and the last one for about $1,200 from a small company. Is it reasonable price for two such a small windows? I just looked at Bunnings and the smalest one they have 1.2 m wide only costs around $200... yes, the fabric is different and you have to install it yourself but still, it is bigger than what I need and 6 times cheaper than the cheapest quote. I am puzzled... Does anyone know a good blinds company in Adelaide with the reasonable prices? Thanks for help in advance. We are spending tens of thousands on them, but ours will be motorised and we have huge windows. North facing windows are your most important, and I'm surprised your house design didn't incorporate eaves that allow winter sun but exclude summer sun. Be that as it may, I recently bought DIY honeycomb blinds from Veneta for a rental property, and the benefit is that they actually add insulation (some claim around R1.0). They are manufactured in China to order, and were reasonably priced and very easy to fit. There are many other online companies that will manufacture and send directly to you, so just search for blinds in your favourite search engine. Re: Awning Blinds for north facing windows 3Jul 28, 2017 7:31 pm Material quality will be a big factor, 3_5 times more expensive with specialist due to mainly quality, then you have 100_200 per window install cost, plus they measure them which is time and a trip, and of course it's custom made for your space, bunnings just has premade sizes, very easily mass produced and extremely low quality, made to not last. Re: Awning Blinds for north facing windows 5Aug 03, 2017 11:19 am Thanks guys, will look into Veneta and search online stores. Eaves should be absolutely mandatory for all houses. Particularly northern eaves, which shade windows in the summer, while letting winter sunshine through the windows. Your options would be retractable awnings, either vertical or horizontal (western/eastern windows require vertical awnings), or louvered sunshades. Louvered sunshades will be more expensive, but more permanent. Depends on the style of the house as to which will look better. The warning is on the sticker on the door too.
