Browse Forums General Discussion 1 Apr 02, 2017 4:47 pm All the walls are coming out of my home (for different reasons which I won't bother going into unless it's important to anyone). While they are off I want to make the most of it. Here are some of the things I am either considering or doing. Please feel free to add to them, correct me, make suggestions, whatever (it all helps) SOUNDPROOFING Soundproofing is high on my list of priorities. Very sensitive to noise especially bass and barking dogs, They annoy me immensely so I don't mind spending the $ to get the best stuff as I know it will improve my quality of life. So far I got Earthwool sound absorbing insulation. The super high density stuff. https://www.pricewiseinsulation.com.au/ ... ion-batts/ That's the stuff I am using, those are the guys I been getting it off. I am fitting it snug in between the studs and putting soundchek gyprock back over the top. If this doesn't suffice (at a later date, when I have more money to burn) I will green glue another sheet of soundchek gyprock down on top of the ones I am installing. How does the Earthwool compare to the Bradford stuff? Given that this insulation is 'non combustible' and it will be installed throughout every wall in my house, does it in practice make my house less of a fire risk? I would have thought so given there is no air in the wall cavities for it to breathe (besides a little around electrical wire) and it can't spread through the insulation? It says the insulation does not sustain vermin, what do you gather that means exactly? That insects cannot live in the wall cavities once installed? Do I require a moisture barrier or air gap between the insulation and the outside wall (it is a layer of fibro cement with weatherboard having been nailed straight over the top of it on the outside) TIMBER TERMITE TREATMENT I am talking about the studs and noggins here. I will probably treat under the floor and the ceiling too later but this thread is 'while the walls are off' First. My home is old. It's probably built in the 60's or 70's so it's that old hardwood (90x45). It has been suggested to me that termites do not like hardwood but I'm a thorough guy so I'd rather just do it if in doubt. What do you guys think? Also, any product recommendations? There seems to be no major brand for this stuff it seems to be just small guys like; http://www.boron.com.au/ http://www.ultralast.com.au/products/termicoat.php I don't know how i feel about spending thousands of dollars on products that don't seem to have any reviews or much in the way of product reputation. The added benefit is that they also act as a fire retardant to some degree and repel a whole host of other insects besides termites as well as being anti-mould. ADDING/MOVING POWERPOINTS I am getting a fair bit of electrical work done (my renovations go far beyond sound insulation and treating timber), therefore I figured why not add a few powerpoints, move them around to where it's more convenient for me (especially considering that the floorplan/layout of the house is changing abit). I figured it would be alot easier while the walls are off. I'd probably request the sparky use something with a high melt point insulation around the copper as it will be in the walls with my insulation which will mean it will get hotter than usual as there is not as much ambient air for the heat to dissipate into Anything else you guys would do or recommend? I want to be very comprehensive in my renovations (this home is pretty close to my dream home and may be as close as I will ever get so I'll be here a while if not forever). Re: While the walls are off... 2Apr 02, 2017 8:16 pm Vermin = Animals Yes you need a moisture barrier but it goes under the weatherboards. Not sure if you can retro fit. Electrical work is the go as you can put stuff on outside walls as the can drill through noggins without taking the roof off. Re: While the walls are off... 3Apr 04, 2017 10:47 pm My neighbors kitchen window is directly behind my head when i lay in bed albeit 2.4 m away with a paling fence between. I could hear her put a coffee cup on the sink at 5am. Drove me mad so ripped off the plaster and put in some snug fitting sound batts. (weatherboard with sisalation) It is now louder than what it was and hotter,as the wall faces west and cops the afternoon sun and retains the heat. Thinking about building a vertical steel frame close to my weatherboard wall and fitting vertical pavers to it similar to a paver display yard. Hello everyone Please advice me how can I install mesh security window or we cab say mesh flyscreen inside while the pvc plantation shutters are already installed?
