Browse Forums Heating, Cooling & Insulation 1 Dec 25, 2016 6:41 am I have an old box type air conditioner in our family room that I installed about 15 years ago. At the time the ratings were in HP. It is a 3 HP unit, probably the biggest you could get at the time. The family room is roughly 60m2.and it cools this room effectively Looking at swapping it over for a split system only because of the noise factor. When I look at the conversion tables they tell me that 3HP = 2.2 KW.yet the sizing tables tell me I need a 6-7 KW unit to cool this area. The say that 2.2 KW unit is ok for small bedrooms, study's etc. Whats going on? Re: air conditioner sizing 3Dec 27, 2016 8:25 pm It depends on whether you are talking about power input or refrigeration output. A modern air conditioner is about 300% efficient. Some are even better (see http://anewhouse.com.au/2016/12/air-con ... han-price/) So for every 1kw of power in you get around 3kw of refrigeration so..... Power input of 3HP = Power input of 2.2Kw = 2.2 x300% of refrigeration output = 6.6kw of refrigeration output. The Harder You Try - the Luckier You Get ! And is it possible to disconnect the duct joined to the vent from inside the house, without going into the roof cavity? 0 5900 Hi all, sorting out the ducted air con for a 350sqm double story house.
