Browse Forums General Discussion 1 Nov 08, 2016 9:40 am I have procured about 300 LM of 140 x 32 weathered ironbark. I have since dressed it and propose to build a external walkway with it. I would like to oil it to maintain the beautiful colours it has. The finished surface is so hard to the point of being glazed. Anyone have any idea what I could use to penetrate it. Re: penetrating wood oil for Iron bark timber. 2Nov 09, 2016 7:09 am I used CUTEK Extreme on my Ironbark decking, got it with one of the tints and it looks great. Make sure you clean it really well with hot soapy water and a high pressure hose before oiling it. Be warned it does take days if not weeks to dry/absorb in to the wood. Ken Re: penetrating wood oil for Iron bark timber. 3Nov 10, 2016 10:51 am It basically won't penetrate at all apart from maybe 1/2 a mm or so. Hardwood is hard wood and as such and the way the cells are you stand little chance of the oil or whatever treatment being absorbed into the timber. If you keep up the maintenance on your deck by giving it a coat maybe once every 12 months then it should still look good for quite a few years. When I see advertising saying that product XYZ is a real penetrating timber treatment I am sceptical. I know a guy who had some Red gum posts that he machined up and seeing as termites were pretty much all over his rural area he wanted to creosote the bases that were going in the ground .Everyone said just to paint it on and then use them but he stood them up in a barrel and soaked them for probably 6 months. One sacrificial piece he took out after this time and ran it through his radial arm saw. He was surprised that it had only gone in a couple of mm at best. The ends a little more. Stewie Re: penetrating wood oil for Iron bark timber. 4Nov 10, 2016 8:00 pm Agree Stewie, Water beads on this stuff raw..The thicknesser was screeming at it.,but for $2.00 a meter of 140x32 previously dressed ironbark I figured I could go thru a few sets of blades.Luckily one pass of 1.5 mm was enough to expose the colour. I will just use some sort of oil on it and be prepared to re do it every year.Too beautiful to let go grey. Re: penetrating wood oil for Iron bark timber. 5Nov 10, 2016 8:34 pm Probably the harshest thing to affect any external timber is the Australian sun. I've seen really nice timber decks like Brushbox and Jarrah being laid then coated with Sikkens and other products which made them look like furniture but within a couple of years the sun had got to them and started the decline in colour. Some people use oil based preservative coatings but they tend to darken over time and you end up with a deck after a few years that looks like it has been soaked in engine oil. When they first go down though, they look spectacular. Good luck with it. Stewie We have a Victorian style ripple iron fence out the front that has some moulded timber capping. Probably 15+ years old and has cracked and splintered in parts...not really… 0 2495 I'm about to put down some Merbau. Is it necessary to oil underneath the boards before laying? 0 1938 Hi, as per the subject. Does anyone have any recommendations for the best value decking oil (Bunning is close to where I live) for a treated pine deck? Thanks 0 10974 |
